| Without papers you cant be 100% sure but trusting you will see the parents of the puppies you will get an idea of what the puppies will look like as adults. Silky's are similar looking to yorkies but they have longer faces and weigh more than a yorkie..do a quick google search of a yorkie and silky and you will see the difference.. good luck with your search!! | What Dawn said is correct, however, if it's a larger Yorkie it may be hard to tell without papers. I say that because when I got Buddy, he has papers, he did appear to look like a Silky when I saw them on a AKC dog show on TV. Actually he looked exactally like the one being shown. Even my daughter called telling me it was Buddy's twin! But Buddy is all Yorkie. My neighbor has a female Silky and you can see the difference in the two. Strange but without papers I am not 100% sure you could tell. |

there you can look at the difference, although, as pups they almost look identical. If she breeds both kinds of dogs, or any other kind of dog for that matter, and with no papers, I probably wouldn't get one, unless you're getting a super good deal, and you find one you can't resist | |

YT Addict | Overbreeding :( I remember reading an AKC article a few years back about the differences of the two breeds and the reasons for similarities in the pet world. With the irresponsible breeding practices going on, individual characteristics of the two breeds have blurred. Many BYB are breeding yorkies to silkies (unintentionally/intentionally)... it's sad. You can't even tell a Yorkie from a silky these days! Some "yorkie" breeders aren't even aware of the "silky" breed. These two beautiful breeds are loosing their identities...real fast!

| The Silky was developed in the late 1800's by breeding the Yorkshire Terrier to the Australian Terrier. During this period some were being shown as Silkys and some were being show as Yorkshire Terriers. In 1906 the Silky was established as a breed, that is why there are so many similarities. |

| Your best bet is to buy from a reputable breeder...Someone who knows the history of his/her dogs' pedigrees, etc.

| In November, I kept a little Silky puppy for part of a day. He had become lost because of the ignorance of his owners. He was just about six weeks old and cute as a button and sweet as can be.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I am sorry that lady was so RUDE to you!! As an owner of two Silkies and two Yorkies, I can atest to the fact that many people do not know the difference and mistakenly call our Silky Terrier, Yorkies. I try to nicely correct them and teach them a little about the breed. There is a difference but it seems like some Silkies do look more like Yorkies and some Yorkies look more like Silkies. It can be hard to tell, esp. at such a young age. Please don't hold that lady against all the rest of us Silky owners...

| Go heavens, Morkie4, I thought I knew the difference between a Silky and a Yorkshire Terrier, but now I know I don't. They look exactly alike. Joanne |
