3 year rabies shot

Pixie is due for her Rabies shot and they are recommending the 3 year shot. Cali and Maya get it woth no problems but Pxie is a little smaller about 4 lbs. Do you give yours the 1 year or 3 year? Thanks

I just got Chloe the 3 year this time...she didn't show any reactions to any of her vaccines. She got that and a 5in 1 booster.

They are the exact same vaccine. Puppies should get their rabies vaccine between 12 weeks and 6 months of age (depending on the individual). They then get another 1 year from the date of the first vaccine. After that, they can get a rabies vaccine once every three years. It's the exact same vaccine though - some vets still give vaccines every year but I think overvaccinating is a bad thing. There is a study beginning that will hopefully determine exactly how long a rabies vaccine causes immunity (it's thought to last at least 7 years)...so hopefully one day we won't be vaccinating so often. As MyFairLacy said, they are the exact same thing. It is manufactured by Pfizer and just packaged differently depending on your state's requirements under the name Defensor I and Defensor II.

Request the one packaged for three years so at least Pixie won't be overdosed on the vaccine.

Thanks!!! Last year she had her first rabies shot when I got her at 13 months and it was the 1 year so I will get the 3 year one. I know my vet now gives the distemper every 3 years too.

The 3 year rabies shot almost killed Kia. Susan said they are not the same and never let the Vet give it to her again.

Kia is just 4#s.

No, not here. Mine are not due for a Rabies until 09, but I am going to have the titer run on them to see if they even need it first.

Do you have the option of waiving it in your state? Most states require that you get the rabies vaccine even if you do titer.

I trust my vet explicitly BUT when I mention not getting a rabies shot each year, he frowns. It is their policy that to be able to bring Tatum in for grooming or anything, she has to be up to date with a yearly rabies. I guess I have to go with what he says. Tatum has not had a single problem with any vaccinations. Our toy poodle never had a problem getting annual vaccinations either - except that he had to have something extra (can't remember) before shots because he got nauseous. Not saying my vet is totally right on the rabies issue but because of the area that we live in, he says the chances aren't worth taking. Now, if your dog never set foot outside or socialized with other dogs or animals, the situation would probably be different.

It's sad to me that some vet just will not change their ways. Texas state law only requires a rabies vaccine every three years. Texas law states a puppy must be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age and then again in one year...then after that every three years.

Kayah just got another rabies shot a couple of weeks ago (she turned 2 in Sept.)

I think when they turn one it's best to vaccinate and then when they are reacing their second year and ready for shots to give them the 3 year then. There is too much vaccinations going on if you ask me.

ZOey has her puppy shots and will get her shots again when she turns 1. Then when the time comes I want the 3 year to give her a break. She is so small I am sure that the meds will hang in there.

I think it's ever year but honestly they don't particularly enforce it like that. I am not giving it to zoey every year. She will get it every two years or so.

I'm glad this was posted...I am going to talk to my vet. I just got a reminder notice that Diva is due for her Rabies vaccination..she had one last year. If they can be given every 3 yrs, I'd prefer that...but I guess I'll have to check what the law is here....maybe if I request it, they'll do it. I am calling them tomorrow.
