| Tape Worms I found out over the weekend that my lil girl had a tape worm and that they get them from fleas. Just so everyone knows she didn't get them from my house!!! When my boyfriend bought her, he took her to his moms and his brother has a bulldog that lives outside, but was in because of the cold weather and that's how she got them. Anyways, the vet gave me a pill and that took care of it but is there anything I can use to make sure she doesn't get them again? She is 10 wks. and a lady that is a dog groomer told me I could use Adams Flea Off or bathe her in Joy and I also heard to mix up Drift and water in a spray bottle and that would kill them. I wanted to get more opinions from other yorkie owners before I did anything. I haven't seen any fleas on her, but she is still scratching and chewing a lilttle bit. |

| We use Advantix or Frontline (whichever one is on sale) and the boys haven't had any problems with fleas or ticks. EXCEPT when it was right at the end of the month and we visited my daughter (Great Danes) and her house was LOADED with fleas.....we ALL got 'em!!!! Momma had a talk with that girl.......... |

| yes, we also use Advantage on Trevor. The vet put it on him at 7 weeks. He is also on Sentinel which is for heartworms and also kills round worms, etc. Last week he woke me up throwing up and had diarrhia. I was so upset, but didn't want to call the vet at 2:00 am. So as soon as the vet opened I rushed him down there and found out he had a terrible case of tape worms. They had wormed him about 10 days before, but they were so bad, it didn't kill them all. The vet came him a shot to kill them and some more pills. He started lecturing me on keeping my dog free of fleas and I had to set him straight that my dogs NEVER have fleas and if he checked Trevor's records he would see that the day after I got Trevor and took him for a check up that he had flea dermatitis. So he got the fleas from his breeder. Luckily it was a visiting vet since mine was out of town. Boy, I hate vets that talk to you like you have no sense! Cyndie |

| I use Advantage on mine and it keeps the fleas off. My understanding on tapeworms is the only was to detect them is in there stool and now they can give them a pill to kill them. Check with your vet on which flea medication he likes. There are a lot of them out there. Some take care of alot of things, but my Vet doesn't recommend them. With a small dog there as been a lot of deaths with some of the products. Will see if I can find the thread about them....................Cindy |

| Our vet gives Toto the Sentinel [sp?] for heartworm. When she was small she only got 1/2 tab once a month ... it was a big day for us when she got larger and could have a whole pill! Also, during flea season, she gives Advantage. Again, when she was small she only got 1/2 the tube and later gratuated to a whole tube. Since she isn't around other dogs very often and seldom is on the ground, I don't have to use it very often. I don't think the summers here in Colorado will be as bad for fleas ... they are terrible in Alabama and Missy, the Border Collie, never misses an opportunity to put a "pawfull" on Toto!! You can rarely even find one on Missy ... but if she gets within three feet of Toto, sure enough, Toto gets one!!

| Our vet has Tatum on the heartworm/flea pill combo and the topical stuff - can't remember which one it is and I'm not at home to look. We have outdoor cats that have fleas - although they get treated too - you just can't control the fleas too well in the country with outdoor animals around. We've never had any problems being on those products and the vet has chosen the safest ones. If you have any occasion to be around animals with fleas, I would recommend these products. I'm glad they could treat the tapeworm that easily. That could be a scary thing!

| When I took her last friday the gave me a pill for the tapeworm and by that night she had gotten rid of them. The vet told me that more than likely she got them from her breeder rather than from my boyfriends moms house. Yesterday when I took her to the vet for a checkup and a shot the gave me some freebies and one was a heartworm pill like Sential (can't spell) but it was Interceptor (i think) they are made by the same company? The interceptor is for heartworms, flatworms, roundworms, etc and the Sential is for heartworms and fleas. When I got back next month I'm going to ask about getting her put on Senial because I don't ever want to take any chances with the tapeworms again!! Not only was it gross, it scared me half to death I cried for almost 2 hours b/c I didn't know what to do. I didn't know that the dewormer they give puppies does nothing for tapeworms. Nala is still scratching and chewing a little bit, is that normal for yorkies b/c of their skin. Sorry I ask you guys so many questions but I'm like a mother with a newborn baby and freak out every time she does something |

| Mojo and Byron are always on heartworm (heartgard plus) and fea/tick (frontline topspot) medications. Florida is a state with high level of cases of both problems (heartworm is about 70%), so i have to be careful all year around. When i first got Mojo i bought some flea medication (don;t remember brand or name) and that think was so stinky :O and very oily. As a recomendation by my vet and my breeder, i spent a few dollars more and got frontline...we have always to be careful with our babies...after all, if they do get sick we will spend more at the vet and have a big heartache... kp_23: I hope ur baby never has this problem again!! |

| Our new Yorkie will get Sentinel We purchased a Yorkie yesterday, and he is going to be given Sentinel. It kills not only fleas and heartworms, but a number of GI worms. One of our non-Yorkies got the shot that they just took off the market. She'll get Sentinel too. Dean, the tenative name for our 18 wk. 3.5 lb Yorkie, is so happy to be home, dematted, and able to see now. (Although Mommy here made him look like poodle when she groomed him. To the groomer from now on I think.) I accidentally cut off his whiskers even! But there was one cute Yorkie under all that hair. Good luck ridding the fleas. Makes me cringe to think of all the ookies they can get. -Lori |
