YT 2000 Club Member | Have A Question Is it common (or right) for people to ask more money for a yorkie because they are smaller (one being smaller than the other)? I've read on some sites to stay away from people that do this. With you all being yorkie owners, I imagine some are breeders as well and I don't know if I should stay away from someone that does this. My sister has wanted a yorkie for as long as I can remember but they cost so much and my sister just can't pay the price that people ask for them. So, my daughter, my husband and I have decided to go in half and half and buy one for my sister when we get our income tax. We've already talked to my sister about this, at first we were going to surprise her with it, but then I decided to just tell her because I wanted to make double sure she is ready for the responsibility and that she hadn't changed her mind about having one. We've all been keeping an eye out for one and I found one I was kinda interested in for her, so, I called the lady up. In talking with her, she said the only reason she was asking more for the one was because it was smaller than the other one. A flag went up cause of what I read. So, my question is, is it right for a breeder to ask more for one because it's smaller than the others in the litter? Thanks in advance.

| No, it's not right. What is right is if the parents have been screened for genetic diseases. Also, meet to mom of the litter. Is she 3 or more lbs? If they tried to breed from a smaller female, they aren't good breeders at all. Smaller yorkies will be more susceptible to problems that average or larger-sized yorkies might not have. Price shouldn't go higher because the puppy is smaller. They see it as an accessory rather than a healthy animal. |

| Doesnt seem right, but that seems to be how it is. They seem to want anywhere from $2-3k and in some cases up to $5k for a pup they say will be smaller than 4 lbs. Its crazy....

| I came across a lady who sells yorkies, she says they are older than what they really are, trying to get more $$ for them. This is very bad for the puppy, to be taken from his mom before it's time. My Zander is approx. 5 lbs, he is very lightweight, easy to carry, cute, adorable, well mannered, I could go on ... he was in the ballpark of 700. Good luck and be careful.

| I think it's normal and not unusual to charge more for a smaller yorkie. It's supply and demand. More people who are looking at yorkies prefer the smaller ones over the bigger ones. That's just the way it is. So having said that, you can expect to pay more for a smaller one, but that should not be your only consideration. You also need to consider the type of breeder you are buying from. Do they care about their animals, are they taken care of. Are their puppies healthy and what kind of health guarantee will you be getting. Is the smaller puppy as healthy as the bigger ones? Is the smaller one just an incident of birth or is the breeder purposely breeding for tinies, risking the "mom's" health in doing so. If all is copasetic, then by all means pay the extra price for the smaller yorkie. However, realize, that the puppy may start out smaller but end up weighing the same as an adult as his/her siblings that started out bigger.

| I've always had that problem... Everytime I talk to a Breeder they tell me the smaller ones are always more... But actually my Breeder sold me my smaller one ... FOR LESS!!!... lol. She is AKC, she is perfect... she just has no tail... and had no leg hair when I got her... but she is PERFECTLY healthy... Just nobody (the old meanies) wanted her. But now she has hair galore and I dont have to cut holes in her diapers! lol ... So I win! lol... especially since I got Roxy, I really won the jackpot there. But, also, when I tell other Breeders that I got an AKC FEMALE (cause females usually cost more) that was only 600 dollars, they usually come down on the price... The really great ppl that I am getting Chompers from took the price down from 900 to 650... And Chompers will be their smallest. 2.5 to 3.5 lbs. So ask, some ppl are more than willing to work with you... I thank God for those ppl, because right now, I just have so many things going on... I really couldnt afford 900 just to pay for him...
