| [News] Akita Kills 1 Yorkie, Seriously Injures Other Wow, another sad Yorkie story! Please be aware of any large (and aggressive) dogs in your neighborhood! Be extremely careful when your Yorkie is playing with big dogs! We need to stop having all these Yorkie tragedies! I hope the owner and her granddaughter are not traumatized for life... --- LORAIN, OH -- One dog was killed and another was critically injured on Wednesday after being attacked by another dog that had escaped from its owner nearly an hour before. According to a police report, Linda George was with her granddaughter, walking her two Yorkshire terriers up Williamsburg Drive around 5:30 p.m. when an Akita grabbed a terrier in its mouth and ''shook it around like a rag doll.'' George's daughter, who would not give her name, told a reporter that after dropping the dog, the Akita attacked the other terrier, which was on a leash held by her 5-year-old daughter. ''She was right there, and they're as big as she is,'' she said. The police report said a neighbor was able to grab the girl away from the dog, which appeared to be ready to go after her. The Akita left soon after, and police arrived to find it still running loose in the area, the report said, and they were unable to catch it. The report said a police officer talked to the owner of the dogs, who lives across from George, and the owner told the officer that the Akita was one of three dogs that escaped when he tried to feed them at 4:45 p.m. The dog's owner wouldn't comment. George also would not comment, but her daughter said George had owned the 13- and 15-year-old terriers since they were puppies, ''so they were like kids.'' She said her mother was still grieving the loss of the dog, and she said it doesn't appear that the other dog will survive. She said it was at an animal clinic. The police report said the officer, who had complaints of the Akita and two other dogs running loose two weeks ago, chased the dogs for 20 minutes yesterday before the owner arrived. They were eventually caught and the owner took them home. According to the report, no charges had been filed yesterday, and the dogs were left in the owner's possession. Police wouldn't comment on the incident. http://www.morningjournal.com/site/n...&PAG=461&rfi=9 |

| Rottweiler charged our little Max Fast Eddie....we were walking the beach in Galveston yesterday, I had Max on a long leash so that he could explore yet be safely retrieved, if needed. An unleashed Rottweiler came charging out of the dunes and headed straight for Max. I am sure that he would have been killed. Max is tiny, submissive and completely helpless. I quickly placed him under my shirt and was ready to drop and roll on top of him. I was about 6 feet from a large trash can and I was able to use it as a barrier between me and the dog. Finally the owner was able to restrain the dog. We had a rather heated "discussion" about allowing an 90 lb dog to roam the beach...while I had a tiny 5 lb yorkie on a leash. I can't believe the irresponsibility of dog owners sometimes. I was shaking so bad and so angry that I could have cheerfully choked her and her dog. I went back today...and had a walking stick, spray and an umbrella (A vet told me that opening and closing an umbrella would confuse and protect a person from the attacking dog) I haven't tested that theory yet. Anyway it was a very terrifying situation. I am so sorry to read about the yorkie death from the Akita...I am sure that Max would have met the same fate without my intervention. |

| Wow, that is incredibly scary Max's mom! I'm glad you were able to protect Max! A 90 pound on the loose is not only dangerous to smaller dogs, they are dangerous to children as well! |

| "[News] Akita Kills 1 Yorkie, Seriously Injures Other" WOW! Fasteddie, seems like this sort of thing is getting more common? I believe that agressive behaviour in any dog has a lot to do with it's owner. I know that it's genetic in some breeds [at least that's what I have read] ... but still, it would seem to me that owners of this type dog should be held more responsible for their actions than they are! If they are not willing to take on total responsibility for the dog, I don't think they should be allowed to own them!! We need much more severe laws and punishment for pet owners!!

| Max's Mom, We had a similar experience in Orange, TX where we stayed in a corporate rental before moving over to Lake Charles, LA where we will be working for about 2 years. I had Toto in her bag and a lady was walking her dog [it was huge and it's head looked like a pit bull, don't know what breed it was!] when suddenly it charged us ... my husband quickly stepped in front of us and told me to take Toto on to our apartment. I was so terrified I could hardly keep from running ... but knew better! He made eye contact with the dog and it backed down .... the dog was so strong the lady could hardly hold it back! It was sooo scarry! We have been talking about a week-end down to Galveston and the beach .... are there lots of dogs and don't they have leash laws there? We have wanted to introduce Toto to the shore but when we went down to Destin, FL found that they don't allow dogs on the beach, period! The park ranger said it was because of the damage that some dogs do such as digging up sea turtle eggs in the sand and the plants that grow there, etc. It's a shame that some are penalized for the uncaring stupidity of others!!

This is horrible ... you would think that animal control would at least keep the dog until the incident was investigated! There really needs to be stricter laws and perhaps it would convince owners to be more responsible. If the dog had been missing for an hour before this happened ... wonder why the owner wasn't out finding it?? I can only imagine how traumatized these people must be!

| I guess every city has their own rules. But I totally agree, that pet owners need to be held responsible if they can't control their pets! If you have an aggressive pitbull or similar large dog, letting them roam loose can be the equivalent of leaving a loaded gun around for people to play with. Only bad things can happen! |

| Galveston leash laws Toto's mom......Galveston does have leash laws...but not all people obey them...Dogs are allowed on the beaches....many people enjoy walking their pets....I always keep a leash on Max....because I want to have some some control of his wandering lust....he absolutely loves the beach and tries to smell and mark every blessed piece of seaweed, dead fish, shell....etc..... I often look behind and all around me to watch for other dogs...however the Rottweiler came from the dunes and I didn't see him in advance.....It was a scary thing. Come on down to Galveston...you will love it.....and so will your yorkie.....just use caution and keep a watchful eye for owners who let their dogs run free. We travel here from Oklahoma often to have a place to enjoy our grandchildren in Houston and Lufkin.....Lots of friendly pet owners and Max is always a hit on the beach... |

| Thanks, Max's Mom! We will ... and we will keep watch for loose dogs! We generally don't let Toto on the ground anyway [her little paws have only touched the ground twice]. But I do want her to try the beach "experience" to see if she likes it. She also runs from us when she wants to play [we're working on trying to break her of it but even though she is extremely smart, she isn't responding to those commands!]
