| Looking for a puppy Hi my name is Katie, and I have never owned a Yorkie before, but I have been doing some research on them for about four months now, and decided that they are the breed for me! I am interested in getting my new puppy sometime in May of 2008, and I live in Buffalo, NY. I have been having trouble finding a breeder in the area, and I definitely don't want to buy one from a pet store, so I guess my question is; if I have to travel a long distance to see the puppy that I am interested in(and that's fine with me)how am I going to be able to work with a breeder to decide what type of puppy I'm looking for (ie temperament, looks, personality, etc.), and pick out a puppy after only seeing and interacting with him once? If someone could maybe share how they did this I would really appreciate it, because I really want to get the puppy that is perfect for me!! |

| Welcome to YT! And goodluck in your puppy search! It's very important to find a reputable breeder. Do your reseach on the breeders you are interested in. Spend a lot of time e-mailing back and forth and talking on the phone. Ask them a lot of questions and of course expect them to ask you a lot of questions as well. A good breeder should be able to match you up well with a puppy based on what you tell them.

| Welcome to YT. The breeder you talk with should be willing to answer all your questions, and send lots of pictures. You will know if it's the right breeder from your gut instinct. If they have a website we will review it for you before you ever go. Best wishes, and keep checking our for sale sections. We have very good breeders here.

| Buying Long Distance I try to work with everyone that is interested in my babies to be sure they are getting the right match. I tell them to write down anything they might want to know and keep a list and add to it when ever they think of something. I spend a great deal of time talking to them on the phone and if possible when they come to my home. When the puppies start to show they're temperment I usually take a video of them both playing and being held so that it shows the owner both sides of the puppy and send it to them, allowing them to have a better idea in making a choice, of course this is done on a first come first serve bases. I only breed my girls once a year so for me it is easy to do this kind of service and there are many breeders out there who have been in Yorkies far longer than I have who can, do and are better at judging their babies without the video. I ask many questions of future parents as well thus allowing me to get an idea of which puppy I think would be best suited to their home life.

| We are in the same situation as you... We are going to take one trip to see the puppies when they reach an age that they may start to show a little personality and spend some time with each......then choose and place a deposit on the one we like. Meanwhile have the owner send lots of pictures. Our second trip will be to pick up our new puppy and take her home! It is at least a 4 hour trip for us one way! good luck!! |

| Hi and welcome to YT! I too have been wanting a Yorkie for some time. and breeders are extremely expensive and dishonest. even on the inside purchasing from a well know person is costly. However, I have been doing research and found a great group of people who rescuses Yorkies. They are United Yorkie Rescue. Great dedicated people who "care". They have foster Parents all over. I too live in Ny State, I found my baby in Maryland. I was that determined to have a fur baby of my own. so, I looked through their website, saw a furbaby, filled out an application on line, submitted. My sister & I drove to Maryland and back in one day. He is the cutest thing! such a sweetheart! here is their website. http://www.unitedyorkierescue.org/?page_id=2 Hope you find a baby of your own someday! Merry Christmas! |

| Not All Breeders Quote:
Yes Yorkies are costly but there is alot of work that reputable breeders put into their babies and while I can't speak for all breeders I know that I myself don't even break even with my Yorkies. I am not in breeding to make a living, I do it for the love and betterment of the Yorkshire Terrier. I am very careful who gets one of my babies and once placed they still remain a part of my family. As for the part about breeders being dishonest... Yes there are those out there who don't care and will do what ever it takes to make the almighty dollar. Just as there are BYB, Pet stores and puppy mills that is just a known fact. That doesn't mean that all breeders fall under that catagory. I pride myself and I know of many other breeders that do the same on being very honest which is one of the reasons that I have return owners wanting another one of my babies or sending their friends to me. I guess in short what I am trying to say is that not all breeders are dishonest and over priced. By the time you add up the time they spend matching up the right breeding, whelping and all the vet costs it can and does get overwhelming at times. My puppies usually range in price from $1000 to $1600 and by the time they are ready to go to their new homes that is about what I have into them between my time and everything else. And when I stop and think about the fact that I paid $2500 just for my two males I think that is a very reasonable price range. Merry Christmas to everyone and I do hope that you find your babie to bring home and love soon... Terri

Yes, yorkies are an expensive breed. But a reputable breeder will be HONEST with you. Stay away from the bad ones

They will work with you. They want you to be happy. And they care very much about their babies. A lot of people have gotten their babies from YT breeders and all seem to be happy. Welcome to YT and good luck with your search.
