My 1 year old Yorkie, Princess Leaha, is barking so much (worse in the last few months) at everything that we might have to find her a new home

Not that we're jerks that "don't like a barking dog". But, My husband has a home office where he has conference calls alot. He is on calls with VIPS and our Princess Leaha is Barking her head off in the background. He can't have that. I need HELP! Do bark collars work? Spraying water doesnt work as I would have to follow her around a 3 story house all day to do that. I have tried crating her when he is on calls and she barks even LOUDER because the crate makes her anxious! I need a QUICK FIX FAST! PLEASE! Help!

Oops, read your thread again...

I do ask that you don't use a bark collar on a yorkie...and since spray bottles don't work...I don't know.

Hopefully someone here will have great advice.

I totally can understand your panic. We had a rescue yorkie one time that had some severe issues and barking was one of them. Sounds like you've tried a lot of the behavior tools already. Have you heard of D.A.P.? It's controversial on it's actually success, but I have used it (in fact, I think I'm going to get a refill) and it does seem to work. It is supposed to calm the dog some. It's a little pricey, but might be worth a try. It's supposed to take weeks to actually notice a difference, but I "thought" I noticed a difference right away. (And heck, if I "thought" I noticed, then that's all that mattered to me!!).

Also, Coby loves his crate when we're gone, but he doesn't like to be in there if we're here. But if there is a repairman, etc., and we don't want him in the way, we cover the crate (like a birdcage) and he immediately quiets down and lays calmly and quietly. Might be worth a try too.

my Remy was an insane barker at the age of 9 weeks ! Yikes... my neighbour filed a complaint against me with the city bylaw office 2 weeks after I brought Remy home . So I reluctantly got a citronella collar and put it on her. It sends an odorless spray up in front of her face when she barks and this startles her and she stops barking . It has worked wonders , now she barks only if there is a reason and then only if she is'nt wearing the collar. Please understand this is NOT shock collar there is no pain , the spray makes a hissing noise when it shoots up infront of her face.
Remy is now almost a year old and seldom has to wear the collar .

You know, I always wondered about those collars. But I never saw that they made one tiny enough for a yorkie. I have read that you can put a little citronella oil (or vinegar) in the water bottle, so it must be safe for them. How small is Remy?

HOW MUCH DOES HE WEIGH? LEAHA IS 5 POUNDS, I SAW THE CITRO COLLAR AT PETSMART AND IT LOOKS HUGE!!! THANKS!

If you get one of those collars, try using water in it. Please do not use vinegar. It could get in her eyes and sting, or she could gasp and breathe it into her lungs. I wouldn't even use the citronella. The shock of the water spraying her should be enough to make her stop barking. I would hate to have to use one of those collars, but I would if was either that or rehoming the dog.

sometimes they bark if they are hungary or have to poop or tinkle. My GiGi used to bark when she was around 1yr old cause she needed me to hold her for a while......it works wonders. They sometimes need more attention then other times or stages in their life.

The mist is so fine that it wouldn't hurt them... even if they inhale it... my dad however tried these w/ his dogs and they didn't work. So it will be up to the personality of the dog. Try it... what do you have to lose...nothing but a few dollars... but everything if you don't. Also... ALWAYS cover the cage... they feel more like they are in a den... it makes them happier and in my experience they calm right down. At night I can always tell if I forgot to cover or if one of the kids uncovered them... they bark... and they never do if they are covered!

haha just send her to my house. my yogi will straigten her out real quick. he used bark and id just scare the crap out of him by using a really low voice at high volumes saying NOOOO. it was like the thunderous voice of God was beating down on his soul. he would stop instantly and cower until i gave him and treat and said good boy, then he was all fun and games after that. yorkies are all different, that worked for my boy, maybe you can get your husband to help you out. btw my wife trys this and it doesnt work for anything he does so id give it a try.

That's the exact reason I had to rehome my maltese one time, I couldn't leave the room without her barking(in a high pitched bark at that), and hubby works also a lot out of the home, and is on this business phone quite a bit..nothing worked with the maltese, I know there are some good websites to give you different ideas on how to get them to stop barking..
Good luck, it's hard to have to rehome them for something like that, but, I've been in your shoes on that one

I've never used the citronella collar, but think it may be an option for you at this point. Maybe this way you won't have to rehome.

The barking collars do work. We had a poodle who would bark constantly in motels. He hated the collar though.

I will try that. I tell her "Leaha No!", but she doesn't care...maybe if I do it like that it will make a difference! She feels like she has to bark at any noise or hint of a noise outside. Even though I tell her no, she can't seem to help herself! It's like a compulsion! She won't even stop barking when I let her out (she'll bark her head off WHILE she is peeing and pooing)! Keep the ideas coming! I wil try them all. Except for the barking, she is a GREAT little girl!
