| Help! Pup won't use pad for pooping! Yoda is using his pad for peeing, but will not use it for pooping! He started out at 9 weeks using it till now. I have started discipling him with a newspaper and taking him to his pad and showing him where to go. This has not helped! Has anyone had a pup to do this? I can not figure out what is causing him to do this? He still has pee pee accidents, but very seldom.

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | I'm sure many of us have been or are in the same boat with you on this problem. Disiplining with a newspaper???? A firm NO (or such) and take him to the potty pad....but ONLY if you catch him in the act. Otherwise they don't have a clue what you are mad about if you disipline them after the fact. Other than that....3 P's Persistance, Patience,....Pays off! Good Luck

| That's really common-both of mine did that as pups too. Just keep correcting with loud, firm, "NO!"'s when you catch him in the act, and take him directly to the pad and say "potty", and when he does go in the right spot, be sure you're using positive reinforcement, giving praise, praise PRAISE and treats. He'll get there, but it takes some time...and a LOT of patience

| Well, I have tried to not discipline with the paper. I have had so many people tell me that you need to discipline dogs just like you have to discipline children. They have to learn!! I show him the poop, swat him(not hard), tell him "no", take him to his pad and say "potty on your pad". The newspaper does not hurt him!! I do not want to shut him in a kennel or have to leave him in a small area. I think that is cruel! Especially since he is peeing on the pads, he knows they are for pottying!! I am just so worried that he may not catch on to pooping on the pad. I have tried so many ways to stop him and none have worked. The newspaper is the last resort. He even has used the pad for pooping once or twice since he started this bad habit. But mostly,he does not!

| If they're using a pee pad(a lot like a newspaper), then you don't want to use a newspaper to discipline...My little girl is 17 1/2 weeks, she uses the pee pad everytime for peeing, but when it comes to pooping, she gets in the laundry room, which is fine, and just goes about 3 feet from it..I never say a word, at least she's getting to the right room, and it will come as she gets older..it takes awhile sometimes, it takes a lot of patienece, and if you don't catch them doing it somewhere else to get them to the pee pad, then it's too late..you get on to the puppy for pooping on the floor after the matter, and it has no idea what you're getting on to it for, and you will discourage him more yet |

| The problem is I am not catching him when he poops. He seems to be sneaking. So what do I do to correct him? Do you not think he understands when I take him back to the poop and correct him? He goes quite a bit, so I just changed from Science Diet to Cannidae. When I am able to catch him, I say no and pick him up and carry him to his pad. He still continues to poop on floor and in air! He goes in soo many differ places. When shut up in his gated area, on he poops on the floor. He never did this even as a small pup! I guess maybe time is the key!

Maybe you can potty train him to poop outside? You could still use the potty pads for when he isn't able to go outside, but maybe he would do well pottying outside

| I used to have this problem with Gracie. All I did is put the piece of poop that I found on the floor on a remote corner of the pad, so she has room to go without stepping in the old doo doo. If I catch her in the act, I give the correction. With time, she has gotten entirely consistent with pooping on the pad. Every once in a while she will start on the pad, dump it in the middle so she has no room to spin if she needs to go more. At that point she will finish off the pad. Soooo, I give her lots more poop room by scattering some newspapers underneath the pee pads.

^^^She speaks the truth!!!! You can't let the dog have the run of the house and then swat him with a newspaper after he has pooped....YOU are responsible for him. If you think crating is cruel, what about being spanked with a newspaper??? and not knowing what you did to deserve it? You have to catch them in the act, or leave him in a confined room...like a laundry room or kitchen. Also, some dogs...weird as it may sound don't like to do #1 and #2 on the same pad...maybe have 2 separate ones just in case your pup happens to fall into this category... hope that helps a little.

Also, just like my 2 daughters, my puppies get to playing so hard they tend to forget about bathroom time. So take him to the bathroom every 20 minutes if you have to. He will eventually get the idea, but you have to show him what you want...also, is he fixed? How old is he?

| Don't discipline with a newspaper. A firm no will do the same thing, and you're not terrifying your pup. I have one that will pee outside all the time, but always comes into poop, and he's five years old. I guess I've gotten use to it, because I just land picking it up, and throwing it in the toilet. I don't think he'll ever get it.

| Ive started Picking up my Lil Marine, the Devil Dawg, Precious, and rubbing her belly saying you wanna go outside? So now if Im busy doing something, she at least makes it to the front door. Now she uses the piddle pad as a chew toy, but hey she has at least stopped chewing on me! LOL I dont recommend whooping her with a newspaper (or anything else for that matter) as they are going to grow scared of you and attempt to hide their "business" instead of doing like my lil devil dawg and attempt to make it by the door. Good Luck JIM

| That's what happens when you try to discipline them like that. It only teaches them to not poop in front of you I've never shown any anger or frustration in front of my puppy whenever he's had accidents. I'd rather him do it in front of me than be scared and only do it when I'm not looking. I know how frustrating it can be. The first few weeks with my puppy, I wanted to pull my hair out because all he was having was accidents . After the third week though, he started doing really well. He's 17 and a half weeks old now and he goes on his pee pad about 95% of the time. It just takes time and consistency. Good luck Quote:
