| Would a owl hurt my Yorkie? My DH just informed me that he heard a owl late last night in our neighbors pine trees that are a few feet from my dog yard.OK, now I am freaking out. I have visions of my baby being swooped up and eaten. Is this a real threat or am I just being a over protective Mommy? What do I do? How can I protect her?HELP! |

| Yes, the owl could pick up or at the very least hurt your yorkie. I wouldn't let her go out alone- especially at night.

| I am in a leg cast right now [surgery].Do you think a motion light and maybe a big scarecrow would keep it out of their doggy yard? I don't know how big it is but Kayti is about 4 or 5 lbs. |

| We have great horned owls in our area. There was an article in the paper last summer about a cat that was found severely injured and taken to the animal shelter. The vet said it had most likely been attacked by a great horned owl but was a little too heavy for it to carry off. The cat weight about 8 lb. Scarey stuff! Eileen |

I never, ever let Wobie outside without supervision for this reason. I try to have him on a leash all the time, because just because someone's standing there, doesn't mean that an owl or a hawk won't scoop a little one up right in front of you.

| Me too Weird that you posted this today. I just saw a huge... huge owl the other day in our neighbors yard so I was already being careful and today while my 4babies were eating I felt a swish by my face and looked up and a GIANT hawk (red tail maybe?) landed in the tree about 5 ft from them!!!! HEART FAILURE!!! I am sure that my neighbors thought I was crazy. I knew I couldn't catch the dogs if I went after them they would run and he would get them so I start yelling streaming... throwing sticks... jumping around ... to get the dogs to be scared and stay on the porch and scare off the hawk. It worked but I saw a pic of a yorkie or maltese...can't remember being carried off my one.... soooo scarey! |

| Yes, it could hurt or kill your Yorkie. Hawks too. (We actually had a hawk fly through a screen door and onto our deck after one of ours with us standing right there! ) Even if the dog is too big for the bird to fly off with--they have long sharp talons that injur and some kill and eat on the ground if the prey is too big. |

| Owls are prey birds, so I would watch your Yorkies at all times if they are out and you have any birds of prey or scavengours about....considering a seagull and a crow have taken Yorkies in Northern Scotland from gardens ! Also a seagull put a huge hole in a Yorkie's head and the poor Yorkie died...in a back garden ! It was only out for a few minutes and the poor owner found it dying. We also had a creep of a Postman who kicked a tiny Yorkie lifting it in the air with his foot about 2 years ago - and he was charged and sentenced - as he killed the much loved harmless pet....that was 100 miles from me, but horrific, don't you think. Any owner of a Yorkie should always watch their Yorkies.....especially the tiny ones....they are just soooo vulnerable to all sorts ! I am so glad you heard that owl and are not taking any chances Luv Debra x x x |

| The owl could very much pick up an yorkie and carry him/her away or hurt it. Please be careful. Also be on the look out for hawks too.

| Here by the lake we have seagulls (or as our local paper calls them, flying rats), terns, hawks, eagles, crows, owls & several weeks ago we had a falcon in the yard. We also have very few songbirds. We tried to "feed the birds" our first year here and ended up throwing away the food....no birds. There was a pair of cardinal's that nested in our rhode bush for a couple of years but they're gone now. We had a gull land in the yard one day and there were 3 mad yorkies wanting him for lunch.

| Some Owls are Huge and if they could not fly very far with your baby, they could take it a few distances away and you do not want to see the results! Same with hawks. We have had three large Turkeys killed by Hawks. One was even dragged out of the pen! My breeder even warn me about Hawks and Owls when we got Noah. I never let my baby outdoors with out a leash on and me on the other end of it. The one reason I love the harness and leash is, I can pull my baby right off the ground and into my arms in an emergency. |

| I would definitely be worried about any owls. In the winter here we have hawks and bald eagles so I keep my 2 on leashes at all times outside. Last year one of the hawks was sitting on the power line eyeing Chloe. It flew onto the roof of the house and continued watching her. It made me so nervous I picked her up and went inside.
