| I dont think it really makes much of a difference unless you plan on having a show dog. If it is going to be your pet I would not worry about it!

| Actually, it does make a huge difference if a puppy is registered with AKC or APRI. When the AKC toughened their requirements to register and started to require DNA testing, many "alternative" registries were formed. These registries are used by puppy mills and backyard breeders, those that can't meet the stricter requirements of the AKC. Getting a puppy with papers from one of the alternative registries often does not even guarantee that the puppy you are buying is purebred. APRI, for instance, registers 'those that do not have documented pedigrees.' It's buyers beware if a breeder registers her puppies with another registry besides the AKC. Please read this article to find out which registries to avoid in your puppy search. http://www.nppmwatch.com/AKC.html |

When I searched for my original breeding stock that I started off with, I was more concerned about the dog and breeder I was buying into and less concerned about the piece of paper that came with the dog. Please, don't automatically label ALL breeders that way--it's not very fair OR accurate for that matter.

| I wish, wish, wish I had read the information contained in Ladymom's post. My male is AKC registered and when I bought him I had no intention of showing him but felt confident that if the breeder took the time and effort to do the paperwork necessary to register the dogs with AKC, I would have a better chance of a healthy puppy. I got the breeders name from the AKC and felt confident that they could be trusted. He is now 2 years old and has been a happy, healthy boy. I bought my female from a breeder who registers ACA. We are now heartbroken because we found out when we bred her that she is a carrier of a genetic disease and it has been passed to the 3 puppies. Upon contacting the ACA to see if they would at least investigate this breeder, we have met with no help and actual rudeness. At least in my case, and I can't speak for others, but I have not found the ACA to be a reputable organization. They allow ANYONE to register their dogs with them and make no attempt to follow-up on anything. In my case, it looks like the information they provided the ACA was completely false and quite, frankly, they don't seem to care. All I can say is, let the buyer beware. I would never again buy a dog that is not AKC registered whether I ever want to show them or not. |

Sorry but APRI does require a 3 generation pedigree. Also there are more puppymills and byb with AKC then with any other registry. AKC is begging them for business. It all really don't matter as the registry don't breed the dogs anyways. Anyways, hi, this is my first post but have been reading a whie and been around Yorkies all my life and seen good and bad ones in every registry.

| AKC registration doesn't automatically mean that you're buying from a reputable breeder and I don't think that anyone is trying to say otherwise. You still have to do your homework and know your breeder. And the same is true vice versa, a breeder who uses another registry is not automatically trying to cheat you. But, those other registries make it much easier to pass off a mix as being purebred. To me, a dog registered under another registry is worrisome Bottom line is, the type of registration is important, but you should also know your breeder. JMHO

With DNA, AKC has, and will continue to weed out incorrect breeding. 5 yrs ago, I received a letter from AKC stating that a female that I had purchased for breeding did not match her sire. It took a year for the breeder to DNA all her dogs and get it straightened out for me. I was frustrated but grateful that AKC was indeed doing their job and caught it. AKC does have more inspectors now, and they inspect breeders that have a certain amount of litters, once every 2 yrs, as long as they have no problems. When they inspect, they also DNA mom's, dads, and puppies on the premises, as well as paperwork. With AKC, every male that has sired 3 litters needs to be DNA'd and they match that to his parents, grandparents and so forth. If they don't match, he and all of his progeny is suspended and removed from the AKC registry. Anyone lying about the parentage will eventually be caught with AKC. Sadly, when a disreputable breeder gets caught with AKC, they simply can register with another registry, that doesn't require DNA, and keep on breeding. I'm sorry, I usually keep my opinions to myself, but that outdated article really bothered me. I take my breedings very seriously and I, for one, will only use and recommend AKC registration! I apologize now to reputable breeders using other registrations. Some of you started out breeding with other registrations, and this was not meant to hurt you in any way. Just voicing my opinion on something I believe in!
