| Same story, different dog.... Yes, the same story...potty training. Our little love ball is 3mths...I take her outside NUMEROUS times on the leash for as long as I can handle it.....she sits and does nothing but then wants to come inside after a while. I walked in the computer room where I could keep an eye on her and set her down....what does she do?? PEE! Same thing with her crate. What is her deal? How do you change this? I know she is young, but really, holding it and having no interest until she gets put down inside is just ridiculous. Also, I put her in her crate and all she does is bark. I can't tell if she just wants out or needs to potty. I know ya'll say "REWARD, REWARD, REWARD" But the only thing I can "reward" her for is telling her "get in your bed" and she normally does...then I give her a treat. There isn't anything else to reward her for......

| Take her out and wait for her to go, if you have to sit out there all day then so be it. Watch her after she comes back in, if you see her going or about to go then swoop her up and back outside you go. Watch her constantly, You have to break the habit of her going inside. I know its really really hard but remember she is still only a tiny baby and she and you will get there in the end. |

| That baby is only 12 weeks old. She probably just recently got any kind of bladder control. Don't be surprised if she is six months old before she understands fully. My Yorkie is six years old and she knows where to go, but if I'm not paying attention she will go inside.

As for the crate, have a second (or third) spare set of bedding. Whenever she soils her crate, clean it up. You don't want her getting used to peeing in the crate. Dogs naturally like their dens clean. Quote:

| Yes, I agree with everyone else. Maddie wasn't FULLY trained until about 8 or 9 months, Sophie is getting better but is still not completely there. Maddie used to do the same thing, she would just sit down. I'm thinking she probably doesn't understand what you want her to do. Make sure you say to her over and over again the word you want her to know, for example, "go potty" or "go out." Then say it consistently EVERY time! And you HAVE to be very very patient...I know it's tough...sometimes I have to stand out in the cold in the middle of the night for 20 minutes...but once they go, and get a treat, the next time they do SO much better! Hang in there, she'll get it. These little guys just can't hold it very long! |

| You truly do have to stay outside as long as it takes her to go. Try cleaning up after she goes and putting it outside where she's suppose to go so she can get the scent.

| O.k....I know ya'll said to wait all day...but at one point I have to feed my kids! Ha! No, seriously, I took her out this morning when we got up...then put her in her kennel to run an errand (maybe an hour) and when I got back, she hadn't gone yet (YAY!)...so I took her outside for over an hour and she never went....I finally had to come in..... O.k...here is her set up... I have a LARGE crate that has her small bed in it, food, and a puppy pad. That is where I keep her at night...is this night right to do? Whether I put her a puppy pad down or not in her large crate, she still goes... (just not inside her smaller kennel that is in there. Am I totally confussing her? During the day I try to keep her in her small kennel if she isn't with me or outside. BUT, she won't eat unless I lock her in the large crate and let her cry for a bit. Otherwise, I'm not sure how long she would go without eating. So.....critique the situation and tell me what I need to fix...I am so open to suggestions.

| New Here- This worked for me. =) I have two Yorkie babies from the same litter. They are now 13 weeks old and fairly house broken all ready. This is what I did... First each of them has a crate and a cage. During these first few days I kept them in their crate (bed or den) and took them out every 4 hours. It was a little rough=) At 2, 6, 10. Since the books say dogs don't like to eliminate in their "dens", this has worked for me. Outside of the crates inside the cages, I had them use puppy pads for the first couple of days. I then took the puppy pads outside where I wanted them to go, then I just took them to the spot without the pad. After about another week around the scheduled times (2, 6 and 10) they started to bark/whine and paw at the door to their crates. This lets me know they had to go. If the weather permitted they went outside to potty, if not to the pad. The next step was; I let the doors of the crates off. I still took them out at regular times but started looking for signs they had to go. As they had more freedom then the crates and more room to make messes. =) They still did the barking/whining thing to tell me they had to go. And I left a pad down so if I don't get to them in time, they'd go on the pad. The information I have is this. If you have them in the crate and they whine take them out and give them 10 minutes of "potty time" where you say to them "go potty" or whatever your "cue" is. If they don't go put them back in the crate. We are now in our next phase of training. We've been training for 2 weeks. We still have the doors to the crates open but now we are starting to stretch out the 4 hours. We are working at every 5 hours. So far, so good. There has only been one time when one of them when potty inside and that was when I had my son at the doctor. He was a good boy and went on his pad. Another thing I remember when reading about house training is that these pups should not have run of the house or large area. Which is why we opted for the the cages. It confines them to smaller areas close to us. The more they show they will not potty in the house the more freedom they get. Once they learn to potty in the house it's hard to change their minds. But it can be done. These are the first pups we've used the crate training with. It's working wonders for me. I hope this helps you. Thanks. Kay |

You know waht I have been doing with my other puppy who is 23 week now, I started to chart him, chart when he wee and poo, then as the hours go I would say let go walkie walk as I realize for his age the holding time was about two hours. then as he got a bit older week by week he held longer and longer. Now at 23 he holds for 6 to 7 hours, so his every 20 minutes went to an hour, two hours then 3 and now 7. he lets me know when poo time is there as he scratches at my foot or the door, or will simply stand at the door and look at it. Start to chart his wee and poo and you will see it works and you wont have to walk so many times. It really has worked out for me | |
