Alteritive To A Muzzle

i HAVE 11 MONTH OLD TEDDY. He is great execpt.
the story

I take him to my moms (in a older peoples place Retiarement home.) It is great a place to walk him. He does not have to be alone on the days I work. she has looked after him since he was small. He is aggressive. He is protective aggressive to mom and me. When walking , some people, as they go by, he goes off. Barking and advancing like he wants to bite them. Funny others go by and he does not seem to mind. We tried the trainer, the treat thing . been doing the cesar tapes. He just flips out. even when driving if someone in the next car stops at a sign he goes off. I think it is not nice to muzzle a furbaby, but my mom who is 85 thinks for safety of the other old people we should try it. help i dont want to do this. I no some of you yt have had the same problem. any help???? He is a little king of the land around here we have 2 acres in sonoma county. so when he is here, we are alone. I tried to start him as a puppy taking him to my store. I wanted him to go to work with me. but a little girl ran up to him one day and he flipped. so I cant do that any more. We love him and would not want to do anything wrong but it is at the point, I cant have company. he just looks at them and barks. He has not bite any one yet. but he acts like he would.thanks
p.s. he was the won that was sick in the hospital most of his first 6 months. I figured out it was not pancresitas it was nutro food . Even at the vet we pass him off. If I am there he bites the vets hands. I hand off the leash and walk out .They pick him up and he licks there face?//

I really don't know what to tell you but to keep working with him.
Buddy will lunge at certain people also and go after larger dogs but
I am always on guard because of this problem. He gets corrected
repeatedly for this. He loves people for the most part but some must
have an oder to them that he does not like. Visitors he loves.
I would be afraid a muzzle will make him more aggresssive besides
they should not be left on longer than 15mins at a time.
He needs correcting everytime he does something like lunging and
repremanded at all times I would think. If this does not work than
leave him at home or in your mom's room with a gate across the door
way so he can't get to other people.

we correct him ever time we have worked with him and we alawys are on gaurd. we go around peope to avide contact. but there has to be a way of braking this bad habit. I am hoping some one has done it and gives me the right way. thank for your replie

My guess is there is some history that you are unaware of.

You realize that with the Cesar Milan thing, you are not correcting the dog, you are correcting yourself.

You and your mother both need to make sure that you are the pack leaders and that he knows that you are.

here are a few suggestions if you have not already tried them.

1 you always go through the door first, He must sit and wait for you to tell him that he can go through it.

2 You eat first. When you go to feed him, sit down on the floor with his bowl of food and pretend that you are eating from it, he must sit quietly and wait until you say he can eat.

3 Before you allow him to eat, he must sit and wait till you tell him it is ok to eat it

Mine are fine once the company comes in, but they keep a constant eye on them. The only lick the people to death when they approach a new person, so I don't know what to tell you about the biting. I'm sure someone will have the answer for you.

I would definately continue socializing him and trying to work with him around people but in the mean time there is a leash that goes around the nose of the dog. When we did obedience training there was a dog in there (maybe a chow mix) that was posessive/protective of her owner and she ended up using this leash. It does not hold their mouth shut like a muzzle so I'm pretty sure they could still bite if they got close enough but what it does is lets you move their head away from the person so they can't bite them (if that makes any sense). The lady that was using it in class really seemed to like it and felt she had more control over her dog. I haven't used one and don't know if they come small enough but it may be something worth looking into for yourself. Other than that I really don't have any info but good luck I know it can be frustrating. I have a big dog that has problems at the vet and I start dreading his visit months before we have to go, luckily for us this is the only time we have problems with him, well that and feeding times but noone is around but us then and he's fine with us.

The gentle lead halter has been an amazing tool for us. Penny has big issues when she sees strangers, other dogs, etc. I had a trainer recommend it to me, and it has done wonders as far as keeping her under control.

Penny can still eat, drink, bark, play, etc. with this halter on. It just gives you the control and reminds them that they are to follow your command and your lead.

We bought the Small for Penny in a gold color so it blends in with her fur. And we are planning to get one for Riley as well to aid with her training when taking walks.
