| We need some help!!! We have an 8 month old Male Yokie named Gus (actually Gus Gus, named after the fat little mouse in Cinderella.) He is the sweatest little thing and we love him to death....BUT....we are having the hardest time with two things. First, it has been 3 1/2 months and he is still not house trained. We take him out often, first thing in the morning my daughter gets him out of his crate and takes him outside. He does his thing quick and he knows what to do. After that we bring him in for breakfast and playtime. 30-45 minutes later he wets on the carpet. No notice or anything. second issue. his crate. He hates it!!! It is big enough for him to stand up and turn around and get comfy but thats it. When we put him in it he growls and bites at our fingers, then the barking comes. Not just for 10-15 minutes, we are talking 1.5 2 hours of non stop yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, if you get my drift. Our kids are great with him, they play with him he plays with them (6 year old girl and 3 year old girl). We are at the end of our rope.....We thought we were doing it all right but it has NEVER taken this long to train a dog. PLEASE any help would be great! He is very healthy and very active which we are glad about. |

| You will find lots of potty training tips here!!! I've only used a crate when leaving the house, never during the day when I was home before, so I don't know what to tell you about the constant barking. Giving a treat when going in the crate helped us. Perhaps try an x-pen rather than the crate and maybe use a wee-wee pad in the pen?? Yorkies can be very stubborn when potty training. Even though you think he isn't giving you signals, he might be very subtle. Sissy just sits and looks at me. It took me a long time to figure that out. I would take him outside again no later than 30 minutes after he eats. Both my girls go pretty quickly following a meal. Hope this helps. Also so a search on this site for potty training and you will get lots of other tips.

| yorkies who hate the crate! Well one can hardly blame a pup for going yip yip yip...................& yip when in a crate. It must be dead boring to be confined in a crate just to make life convenient for the humans. My yorkie would surely be very traumatised if I put her in a crate. She needs to spend her time exploring the house, chasing the cats, finding a sunbeam to lie in, searching for her hidden toys, stealing socks and so much more! Life is for adventure and fun, and how much fun can it be stuck in a small container for hours every day? Sure, she does have an occasional mishap on the carpet. But that means we must be more vigilant. We would never confine her - not even in a room, let alone a crate. |

| I can understand your possition but that is completely contrary to what the other posts say. If he is not being watched then he needs to be in his crate. I work out of my house and can not keep an eye on him 24/7 so he has to spend some of the day in his crate, especially during this time of potty training. I would give anything for him to find a nice ray of sunlight to sleep in but he doesn't ever sleep! He runs around and pees on things. Don't get me wrong, he doesn't spend all day in the crate he is out a lot but sometimes he does have to hang out in his crate. As far as "just to make life convenient for the humans."... I am a human and pets come second to me and my family. We love this dog like a member of the family but its not going to be given a place of authority in our house, im sorry but he will have to do some things to make like more convenient for us humans. I hope that wasn't to harsh. Jake |

| HI all, I just got a 8wk yorkie male about 2 weeks ago. I have been doing the crate training technique, it seems to be working. We put him in during parts of the day and at night, yes he barks for about 5 min and then settles down. There is a soft bed in the back and we put a pad down towards the front. We left a ball for him to play/ chew on when he gets bored. May be trying putting a comfortable bed and some toys and see if that helps. I build a custom play pen for him which has the crate attached to it. This way he can go to sleep in the crate when he gets tired. hope it helps |

| Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought of putting a ball in there for him. The got him from a yorkie rescue and they said that the crate needs to only be big enough for him to stand up and turn around in. We had him in a MUCH larger crate and he had multiple accidents in it so we moved to the smaller one. he does great in that crate except the barking. I think we are going to try taking him outside more often and see how that works. do they calm down some when they get older? |

| I had a problem training my yorkie too. I did not want to leave him in a crate all day, so I had him confined to my bathroom. I used a baby gate to block the doorway. I only would let him out when I could have all eyes on him. If I saw him sniffing around, I'd put him back in the bathroom. I have him trained to go on a dog toilet now because he won't do his business outside. When he goes outside he thinks it's playtime. Perhaps if you can put your puppy in a slightly larger area...it would help with the barking. Good luck and keep us updated! |

| Yes they calm down alot as they get older. Maybe get him some bully sticks to chew on when hes in his crate. Your doing right training him in the crate. Just keep it up and it will get easier

| I'm not sure about crate training since cody is in his crate 2x a day for maybe two hours at a time. the peeing, maybe try diapers. I use baby diapers on Cody if he goes in the house (he will not go in the diaper), it has helped alot.

| The crate Hi Jake, I understand that in some situations using a crate is unavoidable. I am sure most people who use a crate do it for only the best reasons. And I know that it is widely accepted as a training method. But for me, putting my dog in a crate is not an option. My personal feeling is that animals should run free. Though I understand that my view is not necessarily the only one. Or the most practical one. Anyway, good luck with your little one. I am sure he will get the messgae eventually. |

| I prefer an ex-pen for confinement. I'm a sucker for the whining and the barking when I tried to crate. Otis has a crate but it is always open and he goes in and sleeps in it frequently. I wish I had been stronger because they still have accidents on my wood floor, sometimes. Maybe try belly bands when he's inside but not confined. They help me alot!!
