| Just watched It's Me or The Dog today. And what they did was they took a dog outside to this park and while it was on it's leash they would give the command for come and then give a treat. Then when the dog was let off the leash and it came every time b/c it associated the treats with coming when called.

| I taught sit first, and if they know there name then just call them. And then reward them. I started out with Aubrey on a leash. |

My furkids Donating Member | The girls just finished Puppy Kindergarten. To make them come you have to first make them sit on your left side. If she won't sit on her own push her bum down...tell her she's a good girl, in a high pitched voice. Then use a hand signal to make them stay, kind of like you are gently going to push them from the front. and say STAY. Don't yell but, be firm. (Make sure you have her on a leash with collar). Stand in front of her, and start to walk away....slowly...if she starts to get up, give the hand signal again and say STAY, only walk out to the end of the leash. Make her stay for a about a 1/2 of a minute. Then, in a high pitched voice say COME! When they get about a foot from you sat SIT! (OH make sure you have the treat in your hand and don't lift the treat as she comes to you...you want her to SIT AND STAY before you give her the treat) If she comes tell her good girl/boy...and give a treat. eventually you will be able to walk across the room or yard and make them come. You have to be consistent with these little ones as they have a mind of their own. My girls do very well with this...however when they are off the leash it's almost like they don't know what to do. Right now I always have to have some sort of a treat (I use cheerios) or they won't come if off the leash. But, we are still in training. Good Luck!

| I have the same trouble with Cody right now. I'm working on the "come" command. he knows how to sit. but when he has done something wrong i try to divert him with a toy. works for a second then back to getting into things. so i say Cody "come" .. nope. he runs off and begins the chasing game cause he knows he is in trouble. He knows by now what he can and cannot chew on. He is smarter than a fox. I am trying to be real patient.... |

| "Come" I read that they don't like to come because they think you are going to punish them, as usually you do try to get them to "come" after they have done something bad,,,So what you do is play the "where are you game...." We get a treat and hide somewhere in the house...call there name as in "Tybo where are you?" If they come in the room where you are give them a treat and do this on and off for several days...Then when you call out "Where are you" they will come because it is used as play and reward not used as a point of punishment...It works for mine....

| This could be true, but I wouldn't want my dog to go to just anyone that might call come...That is a really good way to loose your dog to just anyone that might want them for their own...

| Some of the tips our Trainer gave us: -never use the "Come" word when your dog has done something bad or needs to go or do something unpleasant, like go into his pen because you are going out, or have a bath. Likewise, don't use "Come" to make him hurry up when you are walking. Find a different word. We use "Let's go" or "Hurry, hurry" -try walking away from your dog and turning your back before calling "Come". Then, start running away from him. This way he has to chase you. Also, dogs keep other dogs away with eye contact so removing your eye contact may make him come easier. -always reward the "Come" with treats, lots of praise, happy sounds, etc. Never punish a dog that has come to you voluntarily. HTH
