| Some Help please!! Can some of you list good type of treats that will take a while to finish , or hard to bite for our furbabies? So we can eat our food, while Missy is occupied with something else, extremely delicious to not walk away from!!! Thank you!! Her begging/barking hasn't stopped.... and I don't think it will ever stop until she is a old dog lol. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i agree. i would not condone this behavior. When i am eating i make morgan go lie down somewhere and if she doesn't listen then i put her in her pen. You can try giving her her own dinner in a separate area when your eating, or give her a bully stick/flossie to occupy her while you eat.

| Agreed. Mine can be in the kitchen when we eat, but only if there is no obnoxious begging going on. If they do, they have to leave or go in their kennels. Doesn't really take too many times before they learn it's in their best interest NOT to be obnoxious.

| Guys, trust me, I've tried it all. I even had another thread about the excessive barking and begging by Missy... and used the advice.... but she still continues. Thanks to my parents, they gave in easily ... seeing that sad puppy face sitting down so cute.... It was an on-going situation with my parents and Missy, so i really don't think I CAN STOP IT. It would probably take a professional trainer to do the job, but we don't have any money for that right about now... I am aware that some members give a treat for their dog while they eat, so they know that it is time for humans to eat, HERE IS YOUR Treat. Please guys, let me know what are great treats out there for yorkies. Thank you. BTW, I don't like keeping her locked in a room because she goes insane .... starts to jump up and down against the door... she is too small (therefore fragile) and I am afraid she will hurt herself. Also, the whole kennel idea doesn't work too... she just cries and cries and cries.... leading to extreme stress, and I don't want that for her. I know Missy... she is too hard headed lol... and quite frankly a spoiled little one because she has gone through so much and nearly died. yes it is our fault... but I am not here disgusting that, I just simply need sources on great treats for these lovely dogs. Thank you , anyway. Last edited by Tina_Luvs_Missy; 08-11-2007 at 09:27 PM. |

| I feel for you that is exactly what happened with my first Yorkie, Spencer. It was our fault we gave in to that sweet little face, and before we knew it...there was never any peace at meal times...it was horrible. Will a bully stick work? Or Flossie? I've never used these...as my boy now, Winston never begs...he has never had any people food, only his dog food...he eats that at meal time with us then goes to his bed when he's done. AAAAAhhh the silence is golden. Good luck...this is tough, spencer never out grew it...and it was sad.

| If money is too tight for a trainer right now, what about renting the Dog Whisperer season on DVD? So many of the "different" problems are addressed with similar solutions. Maybe you could get a couple of hints (or will power - because ain't that what it takes!!). At least you might get a bit of your "pack leader" instinct back that your baby stole from you. Don't worry, it has happened to all of us at one time or another. I'm much better this go around - I swear I won't give in!! ....well, not as much anyway. Something interesting about Cesar and I wonder if anyone else has noticed or agrees ---- he is so AMAZING with the dogs HOWEVER we've noticed that the Yorkies don't immediately fall under his spell as all the other breeds seem to. He does always seem to succeed in the end, but it's funny because I swear that they give him a bigger challenge!

| Don't feel bad I'm in the same boat with Penny. She barks till you think you'll lose your mind. I do put her in my room, but can still hear her barking. I'll try the kong with peanut butter. Maybe it will glue her mouth shut.

| I agree with the others, I would not tolerate the begging. There is no treat that will keep her occupied, she wants what you have. Stopping the begging is not going to be easy, but the reason she does it, is because she does not respect you as the top dog. The behavior can be corrected. I would suggest getting the Dog Whisperer DVD. |

| She is doing it because she is being rewarded. Dogs minds work very simply. If I do this, this happens. If she begs, your parents give her food. Loki is trained NOT to beg because we never rewarded it. He begs at my parents' house because MY DAD FEEDS HIM. He's not stupid! What we did was teach them that if they lie quietly and don't bug us, they get a treat or taste of our food when we are done. I get UP from the table and go give it to them in the other room or I put it in their bowls. If I can time it right, we all eat at the same time. That keeps them occupied. Otherwise, puzzle toys and bully sticks are great for keeping them busy while you eat. I don't think there is anything wrong with distracting them. Some people teach their dogs just to lie on a rug or go to their crate, but if she is that excited it might be best just to distract her. I carry a bunch of puzzle toys and some treats that take longer to eat, like the veggie rawhide. PM me or email me if you want more info.

Well in most cases she goes in her ex-pen in my room downstairs when i go upstairs to eat. i don't let on that its dinner time. i just tell her to 'kennel up', close the door and walk away. since i do this a couple times a day she has no reason to suspect that kennel time equals 'people eating time'. When i do allow her to be upstairs while we eat i tell her to go lie down in the living room (which is 5 feet from the dining room). if she gets up and walks over to the table i 'shht' her and tell her to go lie back down. if she gets up and goes to do her own thing away from the table that's perfectly fine. Let me tell you that morgan is 4lbs. she is a tiny thing and when she was a baby she carried on and threw fits. However i knew she wasn't going to hurt herself in her pen, and i knew that her crying wasn't going to do anything but exhaust herself (just like with children). But if your just looking for treats to shut her up for a few minutes then try giving her bully sticks, flossies, dental bones, kongs with peanut butter or frozen yogurt, or any type of meat chew. you need to find out what works for her.

| I used Dingo bones with Aubrey, now since he has his "real" teeth, it takes him no time. |

| Thanks again for advice on the treats! Well, Missy has a bone toy already, and after looking up on Kongs w/ Peanut butter, I decided to spread some peanut butter on her toy bone and she's been occupied with it for the past 2 days!! So I am going to try and buy the Kongs, when I figure out where they are selling them in Toronto. THANK YOU GUYS! |
