| Is anyone training there Yorkie to go outside? I am reaqding a lot about members using wee wee pads. but is anyone training their Yorkie to go outside. When i first brought Benji home he was soo small (1.9) that I was using wee wee pads. He is now 2.5lbs. Now that he is almost 4 months old and I am training him to go outside. I use the crate a lot. He sleeps in it all night and never soils it. As soon as he wakes up, I take him outside and he goes. I am still working with him not to have accidents in the house. I take him outside frequently. i kinda know the signs that he has to go, shortly after he eats, drinks or sniffs around. What I am wondering is when can I ever expect Benji to let me know when he has to go? Will he ever go to the door on his own? |

| Yes, with training and time you can. Some members have trained their Yorkie to ring a bell (placed near the door) when they need to go. My Yoda has learned to bark or signals us when he wants to go outside. Our pee pee bin is placed outside. He got it down after 6-8 months and after a year, he never had any more 'accidents' inside the house. |

| Schatzie uses both, potty pads and outside. Mostly potty pads however because the temps are cooling down/rain, etc. However, she concerned me last weekend. We took a day drive. Her last potty time was like 11:30. Each hour we pulled over to let her sniff outside on a grassy safe area and she never pee'd. This went on all day and yet no potty from her. So, we made it home appx. 5:00 pm and she was placed in her play cage w/ her potty pad on one end and she pee'd immediatley. So, I have found that now she only pee's on the potty pad, in her own yard outside or when where we camp as she has acclimated our site as her own. I am not sure if this is normal for dog's to not like to pee away from there own area. I would think they would jump at the chance to "mark their territory". But, Schatzie is only 5 months so I guess she isn't in to "marking" yet. Sure made me worry about her going all day like that without going... |

| Sure, the bin is about the size of a cat litter box. Maybe 18inches by 12inches. We just put pee pee pads on there and we trained Yoda to go on the pads at first by dabbing a bit of his pee onto the first pad so he knows the scent. Then we would take him out every hour and put him in the bin. If he did pee in the bin, we would praise him a lot and give him a little treat. And so on... See this thread about the pads: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...light=pee+pads |

| Chester is two years old now and goes out side i was also trying to get him to go on the wee wee pad for winter still working on that. Well chester will now go up the stairs an sit at the door for like 1 min.. if you dont see him doing that, it is accident time. So got the bell from a store the other day. I 'm training them that when we go outside.. and I say the word outside when I let Chester the yorkie and Chelsey the maltese outside and ring the bell. Once they get used to the bell sound I will hang it close to the door and hopefully they will ring it... I pray... then we will know they have to go out. chester only tells us he has to go out if he is in his create he will bark kind of a squeel noise. But never if he is out running the house. He will just look at you and you better be watching him. |

| Sorry I forgot to mention, if you are traiing to go outside. Everytime , I mean everytime you take him out of the create you take him outside and say outside. Then when he is going you say something like go potty or go pee. Make sure he is on a leash and you take him to were you want him to go. Once he get the idea of it. You can just open the door and say outside. It will take a while depending on the dog. |

| I thought it would take a long time to train Ranger to potty outside, but with persistance (and patience) he was trained in a few months. Everytime we took Ranger outside we would say it aloud and we'd ask him if he needed to potty. We would do this about every hour for a few days, then less and less. After a month or so he didn't have to potty as often and having an eating schedule we knew about when he'd need to potty. Even if he had an accident we didn't scold him, it was our fault for not paying attention. When he did something good we used positive reinforcement. Now when I ask if he wants to go outside (to play) or if he needs to potty, if he wants outside he stands next to the door, if not he continues what he's doing. When we don't ask he'll go to the door anyways and if we don't notice he gets our attention But every time we go outside he goes potty no matter how badly he needs to or not. Now we just need to teach him how to hike his leg |

| this is so fun to hear all the different ways to potty train your babies. It has taken so much time of constantly watching for repeated signs that they need to go out. I tried to make mine go on a pee pad just for the convience of not having to get up out of bed in the middle of the night. but..... they would not have that. Buckeye ignored it and Ahia tore hers up. And even tho they have the run of the house in the night (if they want it), they still wait to go out in the morning. I might have took them out more often than I need to but, I took them about every 15 to 20 minutes. Buckeye loves those walks and will pee in his own yard but not poop. He has his spot for that. Ahia got the treat every time she went out with results. She will go to the door and wait for me and if i don't notice her there she will go to her spot in the house. she is only 6 mo. old. Buckeye being older at 4 yrs will come to me and make me follow him. he won't go in the house. I like the bell idea. I have never heard of that one before.

| I haven't heard of the bell thing before. Can someone let me know how they trained their pup to ring it. Charlie and Bella never bark, so I hardly know when they have to go. Usually they go on the pads, but I would like them to go outside always, so it would be great to have them ring a bell to let me know.

| I am also in the process of training Gracie to go outside...she is surprisingly picking it up pretty quick...she loves it outside though. At first she would run to the door and pee or poo now she will give me a few seconds to get her outside.

| I live in Arizona so weather elements aren't an issue and I began outside potty training from day one. Teddy is now 17 weeks old and he has the whole concept down to a T. I found consistancy and a lot of love did the trick. As soon as he exits the house I always say "hurry up and potty" and luckily for me he usually does. I always reward him in some way for successful potty or poo's sometimes it's a treat and other times I throw like a mini yorkie party in my back yard hooting and kissing him telling him what a great little yorkie he is as well as I say Good potty outside Teddy! My neighbors probably think I have flipped my lid but whatever works! |

| I have potty trained Maggie outside for the past 4 weeks. She is now 12 weeks old. She hasn't had an accident in the house for over a week. The way you are doing it, is exactly the way I'm training. I did however hang a bell on the back door. We are working on her ringing the bell if she needs to do her business. Right now all she does is sit at the door, very quiet. Hopefully somebody is close by to see her. I had read that if you take their paw and ring the bell while you are asking them if they need to go outside, it will work. |

| I have my scrappy trained to both he goes out side and on his wee wee pads he just sits and stares at me and i ask him if he wants to go out side then he starts to jump up and down and starts to bark at me ( like hes telling me hes got to go potty) , and if we are not home and he needs to go potty he goes to his pad.
