potty training

How old was your yorkie when it was finally housetrained? I dont really want to crate Binky because Im gone for 8-10 hours a day somedays, so that is not going to happen. So I end up keeping him confined to the patio while Im at work. Well all is well until hes in the house. I dont know if hes aware to go outside to do his thing even though I take him to his piddle spot every hour when Im home. Im currently papertraining him to go in the patio. He goes when I put him ON the paper and stay there. BUT he wont go to the paper himself. Any advice would help greatly.

Probably about 8 months for fully housetrained, and about a year before no accidents at all... Have you dabbed a bit of his pee on the pee pad? Also, use a lot of praise and give him a treat after he goes pee pee on the pee pad. How old is Binky now?

Hes 10 weeks I just wanted to know I wasnt the only one going nuts. BTW... I have white carpets

I love my Jasper, but when I was potty training him I also had a very hard time. I tried crating him, putting him on a schedule, even picking up his poop and moving it to his "spot" so he knew where to use the potty. The biggest problem I had is that he would sit by the door when he had to go, if I had no idea he was there I would find a nice aroma in the air sometime later.

Anyway, this may not be the best option for everyone and it has it's pros and cons, but I thought I mention it cause it worked for me. Based on a suggestion from a friend I bought 2 bird bells (medium size) and a ball of yarn. I hung these items on the front door as an "alarm" for the dog to use when he needs to go out. Working with his original potty times, I would touch his paw to the bells and say "outside" (my potty time keyword). It took about a week for him to understand it and sometimes he would just mess around with the bell, but now working with a schedule and the bells he knows that someone will let him outside to use the potty instead of getting scolded for using it in the house. He also stays gated in the kitchen during the day and doesn't potty because he knows no ones there to let him out if he rings the bell.

Like I said it's good if you have a problem with knowing when your dog needs to go out like mine did, and sometimes the bell will be used to just get outside rather than potty, but like I said there are ups and downs to every method. My dog is 6 months now and I starting using this method at 4 mons.

Good word!! Bigger than my yorkie ... BTW ... we're baaack! It was a wonderful trip ... it was MY idea!! How about that?? Pat said he would make a camper of me!! Will definitely go back to that same spot ... watched a beautiful bald eagle fish every morning ... there was also blue heron ... geese galore and lots of deer ... watched a gorgeous young buck swimming in the lake!! YEP!! We will go back!

We are also back and it was GLORIOUS! So good in fact, that we stayed an extra 5 days!

....and....ahem.....we had seals swimming by our campsite! Isn't nature WONDERFUL???

SEALS?! OK ... I'm going with you and Don next time!! WOW ... seals ... I would love that! I much prefer the ocean to the mountains but you know Patrick ... he loves the mountains! Toto and I think there are way too many creepy crawlers in the mountains!!

Welcome to YT! We keep an X-pen on an area of tile floor for Toto when we have to leave her alone [which, fortunately for us, isn't very often]. We put everything she needs in there [food, water, toys, little bed, wee wee pad and we make sure she has something to chew on] ... it works out great! She isn't happy about it, but there are times when we are forced to leave her!

Welcome to YT!! WOW! If I could just teach Toto that trick ... I would just about be willing to let her pee pee anywhere she wants!!! Just kidding!! But that's amazing! Toto has actually trained to the wee wee pads a lot easier than we expected and it's so much easier for our lifestyle ... but it took lots of "trial & error"! These are the most amazing little creatures I have ever seen!!
