| I am not sleeping at all anymore! Reese is 10 weeks old and will not stay asleep past 4AM. She wakes up and cries in her crate and also barks a little bit. She will not stop until I let her out of her crate (which is at the head of my bed) and let her run around. After she is done playing for a bit she wants to climb into my bed, where she chews on my hand for about 15 minutes, then wants me to put her down on the floor again and stays awake until about 8AM when I am leaving for work. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can get her to adjust to my sleep schedule. I am at work right now and I have been awake since 4AM, I will not be able to function like this much longer. Help!!! P.S. I live in an apartment and can not just let her bark which is what I would love to do. Also, no matter which room I put her crate in to sleep, I would still hear her barking and would be woken up.

| since Reece is so young, I am assuming that you recently brought her home. Mason used to cry and whine in the crate when I first brought him home too, but I just ignored him. The more you give them attention, the more they will continue the behavior. My breeder gave me a rag that Mason used to sleep when he was with his litter - so I put that in the crate with him so he can feel close to his mommy. After about a week, he stopped crying and slept fine. I've also read that you can put warm water in a baby bottle, wrap it in a towel and put it next to your puppy in the crate....they feel the warmth that reminds them of their mommy and sleeps well, supposedly.....I didn't have to resort to that. I also heard that you can put a clock in the crate (that ticks) which reminds them of mommy's hearbeat.....I personally haven't tried that either. I honestly think Reece will get used to the new environment as long as you keep enforcing that the crate is her new bed. I know it's hard, but don't give in to her demands! Good luck |

| Thanks for the words of encouragement. Yes I have recently brought her home. But she has been here now for 2 weeks. She has gotten better though. Last week she was awake at 2:30 and then again at 5:00. Now it is just at 4 or 5? I guess I should just try to ignore her when she wakes up and tell her to go back to sleep. I guess I just feel bad for the rest of the people in my apartment.

| oh ok...then you got Reece when she was 8 weeks, which is pretty young to be parted from mommy and the litter. So it probably takes her longer to adjust as a young baby (Mason was 10 weeks when I got him - I know 2 weeks doesn't seem that long for us, but it's a significant amount of time for puppies). Be patient with her, and you can try to give her comforting words at night when she starts crying, letting her know that you are nearby. Good luck. |

| Oh good luck! My gidget is 7 months old and is horrible with the barking and crying. I finally gave up but the downside is since I don't have her in a crate, she thinks the floor is her potty. Its horrible. I can't seem to get control of her. She is the alpha dog in the house and I have a 4yr old male yorkie and a 12 yr old dalmation. I have not had enough time to work with her like I should. She is so bad and its my fault (spoiling her) |

| Oh Geeze! I hope I can get her under control and fast! She went from being very timid to a complete terror in two weeks. Not sure if you saw my post yesterday but she even climbs out of her puppy pen. I had to order the cover for it yesterday. Today she is locked in the living room while I am at work. I have a random question totally off topic, but does anyone know if puppies get the hiccups. I swear that every couple days she will get them and they only last for a few minutes then they are gone. Any thoughts?

| FYI... I have a 16 week old yorkie. He wakes up every morning at 5:30 AM. So for the last 2 months we have had him, we have to get up at 5:30 every single morning because he is barking and whining. When I saw your posting, I thought it could help me. I must tell you...I am so tired and not sure what to do. I've heard telling them NO and hitting your hand against the crate to make a noise helps - this didn't work for us. I've heard putting a clock in the crate - this didn't work for us. I've also put a blanket over his crate to keep it dark- same thing...bark, whin, cry! The last attempt is to ignore him. We are going to try that for a week. If that doesn't work...his crate is moving out of our bedroom! I need more sleep... =) Best of luck! |

| It took mine 3 months before I had a decent nights sleep. He would only sleep 6 1/2 to 7 hours a night and he got up in the middle of the night to go out. The last month I started to feel ill. I need 8 hours a night. I did have to ignore him when he cried or it only got worse. Anyway, he is great now. He occasionally wakes up to go out but he can make it the whole night. It is really discouraging when you're not sure if or when it will end but they do get better with age. For some the crate becomes their space and they end up loving it. If you want them to sleep in the crate I would say to stick with it and be firm.

| Last night was better, she went in her crate around 10PM and at 12:30 she woke up wining and crying, I thought she might have to go to the bathroom b/c she didn't before she fell asleep so I let her out, BIG MISTAKE. The second I let her out she was running around my bed room and didn't need to go to the bathroom. So after a few minutes I put her back in the crate. Of course she was crying and started getting really loud. I was tempted to move her to a different room but we decide to leave her in there and just try to ignore her. She cried for about 10 minutes then stopped and I think she may have fallen back to sleep. Then later on during the night she woke up crying and we just ignored her again, she stopped after a few minutes. By 5:50AM she was awake again and crying to get out of her crate. At this point I thought since it was so close to 6:00 that I might as well just let her out b/c she didn't seem like she was going to stop this time. I am hoping that by next week she will be able to stay in the crate until 6:30 when I have to get up. I do feel much better today than I did yesterday about the whole process. Thank you all for your posts and words of encouragement. KLogan, I think that ignoring him would be the best thing. I noticed last night that if I ignored her she would eventually stop but when I would tell her to be "quiet and lay down", she would just get louder. I would definitely give that a try. It might be worth a shot. I too was considering taking her crate out of our bedroom but in our apartment it almost would not matter where is was, b/c we could still hear her. And I would probably just be getting out of bed to check on her, and then I would never be falling back to sleep. Has he been like this since you got him? Does he wake up throughout the night as well? How long has he been at your house?

| Hello,Colby is my yorkies name and we had him since Feb. 14th. 05.Colby was in a crate and in our bed room the first night and cried the whole night. The next night he spent the night in the family room by himself and only cried alittle. Now he does not cry or make any sound at all,and sleeps the whole night.Colby is just over 4 months old. Also what size is your crate? my crate for Colby is small, the portable type, not to much room to run around in,he just sleeps in it or takes a rest in it. Good Luck. |

| Puppies climbing out of a pen Quote:
I have heard of a suggestion that if you tip a playpen over and put the puppy under it, they can't climb out. I don't know if I would ever do this, but it was suggested to me.
