| Asking to go out Hello! So my husband and I recently got our first little baby since moving away from our families! She is a Yorkie/Maltese mix and is 11 weeks now. We've been training her to go outside only and crate training for short outings. However once or twice a week we will be gone longer than 2 hours and so we let her roam the kitchen with a baby gate and put down a pee pad. I am returning to school in September and so she will be left alone for about 3-5 hours each day... I was just wondering how long it usually takes these small dogs to figure out asking to go out in these circumstances. Sometimes I've caught her pacing at the door and have taken her outside and she's gone, but she's never made any type of noise yet when she needs to go. I realize she's still little though Thanks!! |

When I trained my Lexi to potty outside she quickly learned to go to the door, but just like yours would not make a sound. If I didn't see her there in time she would have an accident right in from of the door. I started using a bell hanging from the doorknob for her to hit when she needed to go. It only took her 2 days to master that. I started off this hitting it myself when I took her out to go potty, and she quickly learned. You can buy a fancy premade one from a pet store like Petco, but I just made one by getting some yarn and a bell from a craft store for a lot cheaper! | |

| My Abby was scared of the bell hanging over her head from the door so I used two large Jingle bells from Christmas ornaments tied on a string and tacked to the baseboard near the floor. We practised step by step with the bells and treats -then the bells tied together- then the bells tacked to the wood, it took about 10 days. |

| This has worked really great Lexi has been using her bells, maybe a little too consistently hahaha. Whenever she's bored she'll ring the bells :P still working on getting her to tell us though when she doesn't have access to the bells. Thanks! |

| Potty My boy will just quietly sit at the front door when he wants to go out, but if I don't see him he may bark. On rare occasions he will then go on the tiled floor in the kitchen if no other option. I wish I could train him to ring a bell, that would be great. :-) |

| What I've found is that if they expect to be taken out at specific times during the day that helps a lot My guys have gotten used to be taken out first thing in the morning when I get up..... Careful that can be bad if you ever wanna sleep in .... And when I get home from work But you can set up what ever works for you

| My Lucy is so afraid of the bells. We are on a schedule for potty time. I just cannot figure out how to get her to tell us she needs to go out. Besides bells does anyone have suggestions as to how to get her to tell us she wants/needs to go out. |

| My pup is 10 months old, and never makes any sounds to tell us she needs to go out. Never has! It's very frustrating. She just paces from the door and back to you quickly if it's poop, but if it's pee she just stands at stares.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Well at least yours goes to the door, if I'm not on my toes,my little precious bailey will make a mad dash to the dining room and poop there,if I don't keep up gate's and keep him confined to the room I'm in that's what happens. God had a plan when he made yorkies so darn cute if ya know what I mean......he he
