Iron fencing and small yorkies.

I'm new on here and needig some advice. I have an existing rod iron fence that my two yorkies and one Maltese can fit through. They are all about the same age...1 1/2 yrs. a little background...after getting my yorkies. My mom got very sick and was in and out (mostly in) of the hospital. I had barely even had them a few months and I inherited my mom's Maltese. None of them were potty trained. I found myself on the road with my mom and kept the dogs in a small inside gate bc lots of times I wasn't sure how long I would be gone. My kids and husband tried, but as a result, I now have three dogs that aren't potty trained and I cannot let them outside because of the escaping through the fence. I let them out into the garage because the Maltese has run to the highway neArby and Almost hit. My mom passed away and I am just getting things sorted and trying to train these dogs! Is it too late to kennel them during the day? I am a teacher and with the summer break I will be able to let them out more frequently. NOW THE QUESTION THAT SPARKED THIS THREAD! Is there anyone who has an idea, OTHER THAN A SHOCK COLLAR OR SHOCK PERIMETER FENCE, that I could do to my e siting fence to keep them Inside the fence. They simply slip right through. I have doggies bumper collars, but at night, I don't want to have to get them out and put them on to let them outside. I want them to be ale to run freely and play while we are outside also. I just need an idea on something I can do to our fence to help contain them! Thank you for your patience and info!

Also, I would always go out with them every single time, in case they figure out another way to escape, plus there can be problems like coyotes, owls, hawks, etc. It really only takes a few minutes each time out.

My mother lived in a high end gated community...all they were allowed to have were those iron fences. The HOA absolutely DENIED any addition to the iron fencing as being "unsightly and obstructive". I took chicken wire over there at night and did her patio area with the chicken wire against the iron fencing, and it was virtually invisable from the outside....the HOA never did detect it at all. I put decorative brick around the bottom of the fencing, sitting on top of the 8 inches of chicken wire that I let lay on the ground before it went up the fencing. This keeps them from going under the fencing, and under the chicken wire! Now, if an HOA is not an issue, you can get stuff that is thicker....little tiny squares about 1/4 - 1/2 inch squares......that wire fabric is stronger, thicker, and will last longer than just the chicken wire.

Buy deer netting and weave it in and out of the bars. It will add extras barrier to your fence and blends in

Alldogboots - a member on here- sells a colar that prevents the dogs from getting through the fence. Several members have purchased them, they work really well

Thank you for your advise. I am not in a gated community. I have four acres and we live about 500 ft. From a highway...which my Maltese ran into a few months back. I stopped four lanes of traffic including an 18 wheeler to get Molly! NIGHTMARE! However, that hasn't happened before or since, but it is possible. We had friends over and I used the collars. They are so cute and they know when I have them in my hand that they are going out for some fun! I love my babies! I want them to go out and spend more time outside, and I don't want to have to always put these collars on. One dog maybe, but three in the night is too much! Thank you again! I'll let you all know what I come up with!

I have a wrought iron gate that my pups could fit through as well....told the gentleman that made it to make sure the slats are small enough that a say, 4lb puppy could not fit through. Guess what the only one that can't fit through is 15lb Orion, I bought chicken wire and ran it along the bottom of the fence...and like Judy said, put bricks along the bottom so they couldn't fit under it either.

Agreed. We weaved chicken wire in our fence. Didn't need it very long, as Jack had a growth spurt in a week and he can now only dream about getting through the fence lol But the wire definitely worked; same for the bottom of the fence as well.

Would you happen to have a photo of the fence? Just curious and would love to offer a solution but need to see what your dealing with.

Just FYI, you shouldn't Leash a Yorkie by it's Neck/Collar. They have rather sensitive Throats (esophagi) and can really cause them problems if damaged. One should always use Harness' on our little guys.

I've dealt with a similar problem to yours in a couple ways...

I bought three 25' pieces of 1/4" Nylon Rope and Snap Hooks, and just made a permanent outside tie point on the back Porch. Just hooked them up and turned them loose for potty and a little Sun for half to one hour.
HA yea, I had to untangle the Ropes frequently, but it was no problem given their good yard time.

On another instance, I purchased a 30' Roll of Light Gauge Fencing Material, which didn't have large enough holes in it, where my guys could get out. Got about 8 metal Stakes, and just made an enclosure for them to go out in. We were doing some construction, and I needed to block them over on one side of the yard. Worked great, went up and came down easily.
