| Potty training gone bad!!! Okay I have a 10 month old boy and 14 week old girl. The girl uses the pee pads and goes outside. The boy on the other hand is HORRIBLE! He was neutered 3 weeks ago and now he has started something new where he will just come up to your leg and cock his leg up and pee!!! He just did it and I gave him a firm NO and he immediately ran and hid under my daughters bed and I couldn't get him out so I said bad boy and shut the door and left him in there. When I went back in to get him he had jumped on her bed and pooped!!!!! He poops everywhere and anywhere! He has never been good at the potty training but I feel like going backwards. He knows every single time he does it that it's wrong because he runs and hides! Any suggestions ?

| The tricky thing with potty training is punishment doesn't really work. Dogs don't really understand things like "time out". So you can't really focus on "Bad" behavior. You have to wait until they do the RIGHT thing (like going potty outside) and praise, praise, praise them. Give treats. Do what you have to do to get them to associate going potty outside with happy times and attention. Did you recently get the 14 week old puppy? Your 10 month old might be regressing a bit... he wants attention and is probably seeing you focus a lot of your attention on the baby. So pooping on the bed ... if he knows he's going to get a rise out of you... yeah he's gonna do it. Don't give him attention (negative or positive) if he has an accident. He's probably seeing you clean up after the baby... and to his mind that equals attention... so guess what he's gonna keep doing? Also... the thing with pee pads is that they teach your dog to go potty in the house. It's hard to be consistent with pee pads. Dogs have a really good sense of smell... so anywhere your babies have an accident, you have to make sure you clean REALLY well. If they smell pee in your house, they will want to go pee in your house. And if they smell pee in a spot, they'll pee there again. This is another way the pee pads kind of fall short (IMO). Just be consistent. If he (or she) has an accident... just clean it up with very little fuss. Take them outside for LONG walks-- when he's lifting his little leg and NOTHING is coming out of him-- then and ONLY then is he ready to go back inside. It takes time and consistency and patience. GOOD LUCK!!!!!! |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Great advise and explanation ! Your little guy just needs his mommy and some added time reinforcing his good potty habits. Its not to late to get him properly potty trained. Take both pups at the same time giving equal time to each of their needs, giving tons of encouragement will get them to go outdoors and praising them when the job is done. Try treats when they do well after a tinkle or poo in the designated area. Simply said you can not expect one pup to be aloud to go potty in the house pads or not and not the other. If you like to please take a look at my training tips on my site. Hopefully there is something there that you feel may be helpful. The link in in my signature below;
