| Frustrated Joels been slipping out the door lately and even though its pretty easy to get him back I was so worried thinking of what could happen when he finds out he could run away. The last couple times he's acting like he wants to go off more. Obviously it's all my fault for not teaching him, today is the last straw for me being careless. It's so difficult to not let him slip out. I've tried leaving the two gates up in the foyer area, theres two entry ways to the front door but people always leave them open, I told everyone to just not open the door until both gates are closed and that got alittle better but then someone still leaves it open. With the daycare there's about 6-8 times people are dropping off and picking up kids, and thats another problem, when I get close to teaching him he forgets everything when a kid comes through the door. So I was watching some videos on youtube about it and found a good video with 3 steps to help me train him I think I'm going to have his leash on in the morning when kids come and later when they get picked up. Also it's harder to train him bc he pretends he doesn't want anything so he doesn't have to listen, He rather not go on a walk just so he doesn't have to sit for his harness and sit to go out the door So i'm getting frustrated Last edited by ilovejoel; 10-28-2012 at 12:59 AM. |

| Georgie used to do the same thing. For us it was a matter of repetition he would run out and we would say a firm NO and put him back in the house. We would literally practice as if we were going somewhere but we wouldn't be. It took practice but eventually he understood that he couldn't come out unless we told him he could. We has never lived on a busy street but our new street is a little busier and I am so glad Georgie knows not to come out unless called.

| I'm so sorry. I literally started a sticker chart for the kids about the door here...however, in my house kids do not touch a front door without an adult present going out with them, it was really an issue of them letting people in. My last day care provider was my inspiration. State law requires she never lock the entrance so she had a 3 gate system! One in her walkway, one on the front door like a screen and one in the entrance. Your first month thereshe trained the heck out if you...close the gate, close the gate...did you close the other two gates? She did this for kid safety. At fist I was like my gosh this woman came so highly reccomended but geez everyine warned me about her gates...now I look back and appriciate it so much! Do you have a way to make a yard gate? I remember my child care provider saying she was considering these beepers that you can put on gates and doors they beep until its closed...like two sensors one in the gate closed structure one on the gate, unless they touch lining up they beep. We're builing a front gate system this summer for added security. I so very much agree with your choice and empathize with your frusteration. Is it an option to put up half doors people seem to respond to closibg those better...especially if painted red with a white x...barn style.

| Poolguard Alarms - pool alarm, door alarm, gate alarm, pool safety, child safety Pool gate alarm...you can adjust the volume level. Let them learn to close the gate and quickly or get frusterated with the beeping.

My sister thinks he's going to slip out no matter what and we should just teach him to come when we call him, but thats still teaching him he can slip out whenever he wants and it's dangerous. I'm not trusting people to leave the gates shut, what I am going to do is train him to not go out unless I say and until he fully learns it he will stay on a leash

Scoobers after 4 years of training and 2 trainers well he fails recall. A scent hits his nose and he's blocks away.

| I think having a leash on is always the best regardless of whether a dog is trained or not because even with well-trained dogs, if they happen to see/smell something interesting outside, they will just go for it. With a leash, you have way more control of him.

| Well thay was fun...not so much. Pest controm guy here just not only left my backyard gate unlocked but wide freaking open! Scoobers took off like a shot and Elvis chased after him. 3 blocks later I was pabtibg into my cell phone to my Dad (lives a block over) to rush over Milo is watching Marek in the yard I'm chasing dogs down the street. Scoobers finally stopped to mark a fence and I got him half way down the block Elvis was left behind Scoobers and then was running beside me. I scooped Scoobers up and Elvis followed me home. My Dad was already at the house. Milo was giving his brother a twix to keep him busy. Chocolate and having to scent mark just saced our day! I hope your baby is su essful with recall if Scoobers wasn't a marker I'd never catch him.

Joel is a huge marker so at least if he gets away that would help me catch him,lol So far he hasn't slipped out since I've been watching him good. I just plain put him away during pick-up time and thats what made the difference

| This is definitely something that is important to teach... I've read too many stories about dogs running out and then getting hit by a car This is why we built a gigantic privacy fence out back and a picket fence out front. I don't care how well trained my dogs are, if there is a squirrel across the street... All that training goes out the window. My front fence even has a spring that forces the gate closed behind you. I'm not taking any chances!
