Bella is eating very fast!

Hi,

Bella is 3 months and since I brought her a month ago I noticed that she is eating very fast without even chewing her food. After that her belly is bloated obviously and I dont think its too healthy.

is there a way to make her eat slowly somehow?

Is she eating kibble or moist food? If she is eating kibble, I have seen where people will put various sized balls (tennis, golf, etc.) in bowls for bigger dogs so they are forced to slow down. If it is moist food, break it up into smaller portions and feed her on a plate. (This is how we feed Jack his moist food.) This may force her to slow down. Good luck!

she eats dry food only. do you mean - actual balls? that is interesting. what does that do?

ZoE was a VERY fast eater as a puppy. I tried putting a golf ball in her bowl along with the kibble so she had to move it around to get her kibble and it did slow her down for day or two. Then she discovered that if she could just flip the ball out of the bowl with her nose, she could get to all her food quickly again.

She's now 10 months old and now crunches her kibble at breakfast, but still gobbles her dinner. No clue as to why, cos she gets plenty of lil snacks of apple & carrot throughout the day, so I know she's not starving at any point.

It is very scray! I am afraid she will choke or something... and I dont like how her belly is hard and bloated after food.

Ok, I put one of her sponge balls in the bowl and it didnt help too much. she ate like crazy around it.

How often are you feeding her? A family member of mine had a dog that she only feed once a day and it was so hungry it was eating its food very fast.

Morning at around 7AM and evening ar around 8PM and few snacks during the day for good behavior. if I combine all together, for a 1.5 pound yorkie, I think its enough... she is not my first yorkie so I know how much to feed. I think she used to compete over food with her brothers and sisters when she was with the breeder so she developed this behavior.

TODAY my worst fear came alive!! she ate so fast and was choking! she was running around the house because she couldnt breath so I did a heimlich maneuver on her until she swallowed it! I almost got a heart attack myself! now I am seriously afraid to give her food! please helpppp!

Bogie did the same thing last night and he is 3 years old. I swear it took years off my life. We have come to the conclusion he is doing it because, he knows as soon as he eats his supper meal he get his ball (he is very ball obsessed and we let him have it a few hrs each day) Tonight I sat in the floor and hand fed him. We are not giving him the ball after his meal, He is a smart little buggar and has figured out if he eats faster he gets the ball quicker. He doesn't eat this fast for his morning meal or treats. Good luck..we also have the bowls that are supposed to slow down their eating.
