I Love Thor Donating Member | The Barking NEVER ends! I am at my witts end here! ( I know everyone has heard that before) Thor's barking is out of control and it is really embarrassing me (like I have no control over my dog...which is true!) When he see's ANYONE on a walk, or when the trash truck drives in front of our house, or when he see's any other dog, YAP YAP YAP! I tell him 'no', 'hush', 'enough', 'stop' and he acts like I'm not even there. I have NO control over his barking. I really don't know what to do. With other dogs I think it's because he just wants to play even though it sounds really mean and people look at him and take their dogs the other way. It's just rude when he yaps at other people, pets, and cars. He has been socialized although he acts like he hasn't. He has played with many other dogs and many, many more people. How can I gain control when he barks like that? It's driving me nuts!! Hannah ps is anyone else having problems with YT today. It's beeing very slow with me and I couldn't even access it yesterday...I almost lost it! I can't go long with out YT... |

| The site was down yesterday and tody is real slow. Everyone is having problems. My dogs can be real barkers too. What is helped me is I have a squirt gun and when they bark I squirt them and tell them no bark. It works real well for me. Another thing I have heard is to shake a can with change in it. Good luck.

| I have been having probs with YT tooo....figured maybe it had someting to do with the power outage yesterday (but then I dont know where it is based from.....oh well it is up now) Anyhow lucky Gidget doesnt bark when we are out and about but at home she goes bonkers....and usually it is for no reason and she just goes rabid so we have the squirt bottle always handy.....usually after a squirt or two she behaves....we tried the noise shaker but it just made her more crazy so we stick with the water....canned air also works too to get her to calm down.....we dont air her off though just in the air the noise is enough to get her to stop. |

| Another cheap method to try may be pennies in a tin can. Rattle it when they bark and say "No" sternly. They may associate the hopefully annoying rattling around with your "No" and a result of their barking. Good luck! |

| Hang in there... Quote:
But...the first 14 of her life sound a good bit like what your dealing with... She was socialized..but such a barker... She would bark at leaves blowing out our front door ...she would bark at the doorbell on commercials..she would bark when she first went outside just to let the world know that she was there...she would bark at dogs on a walk... Embarass me ....oh I hear you on that too....I can't tell you the amount of times I'd have to just blindfold her with my hand...just to hush her some... My next dog after her..was another poodle...(surprised huh?) LOL She was very different from my Cheyenne... He name was Annie..and the thing I did different with her...is take her to classes....put her in situations where she was expected to behave and be social....and...it really worked... It does cost some..but so worth it...especially if this is your only pet... She had worked up to the advanced level...Annie had an unknown blood disorder...I lost her at the age of 3 suddenly. I have Sophie now..and she just turned 5 months...I went to my first puppy class without pets last night. We bring the pets next week. I hope to get her off to a good start... And..yes...my heart did skip a beat as I left that class last night.... The advanced class was walking in...Shepard..Doberman..Malamute...Springer spaniel...Golden Retriever...and a POODLE .... They ignored the other dogs there...and walked so nicely in...I wanted to stay and just watch... It really is never too late with pets...they are smart..smart... Good luck to you!

I Love Thor Donating Member | If I brought him to a training class he would barka t all the dogs the whole time (at least intially and I would be so embaressed!!! So you think he just needs more socialization? I wish there were some good dog parks in NC. Thanks for the info |

| Oh what a smile these posts brought to my eyes. I know this sounds strange but I take comfort in knowing that other yorkies bark as much, and at the same things, as Lexi does. I tried the pennies in the can thing and that worked well for a while. As soon as I stopped taking it because I thought she was all cured, the barking started again. And now she doesn't care about the can noises. So then I turned to a squirt bottle. That worked for about 10 minutes. I think however, that the squirt gun might work better as it's a stream and not a mist (don't know why I didn't think of that). And the canned air - what genius! I'll have to try that. I'm desperate! She is so noisy on walks and my husband and I would enjoy them and go more often for longer ones once we can cure her of this obsession. Good luck to you! Keep us all posted. |

| Dog Park in Raleigh Quote:
The training class that I'm starting Sophie in...we filled out a form...and there was an area for extra help needed.. Excessive barking had an area to check... I know that my instructor also does private behavioral sessions...to help start one... I am taking classes with the Cape Fear Dog Trainers Club~ Great group...many of these dogs go for show , obedience, and agility from these classes.... I'm just trying to socialize Sophie...and have fun with her at the same time.. I'm a huge fan of getting the dogs out..and having them listen and learn... Like the dog whisperer says...the walk is the begining of ALL Training.. Good Luck to you...keep at it..

| Gucci is a barker also. The only different is that she doesnt bark outside the apt. She barks when she hears something on the hallway, we live in an apt bldg. My neighbor hates my dog and me cause of her barking. When I take her outside for walks she doesnt bark at other dogs and people. Weird. |

| Hannah, I don't have that problem with General Patton, but have had it for years with Bella, my Smooth Fox Terrier. Two weeks ago, when I posted about the General eating Bella's poop, I began to use a water spray to use to discourage this behavior. I am now using the sprayer with water each time Bella does what I call "nuisance barking". It seems to be working. At first, she stayed away from me for a few minutes, but now she just moves away but she stops the barking. I make sure to spray immediately after the nuisance barking. And what is funny is when I don't happen to have the sprayer, I use my hand as though I do, and she knows what it is that I pretending to do, hehe. Seriously, it has cut it down almost completely and this is great because she is a Smooth fox terrier, which I think is more difficult to train. Good Luck.

| Cookie barks a lot too. I have my steps that have helped reduce her barking. 1 - I calmly walk over to where she's barking (since she's trying to tell me something) I look outside and tell her "It's okay, stop barking" and then I walk away. I try not to ever raise my voice because I've heard that teaches them it's okay to be loud. 2 - If she barks after that, I grab the spray bottle (works wonders!!). 3 - If she barks even after seeing the bottle, I spray her. This has reduced her barking and helped her to listen to me when I say "It's okay" then she calms down. Good Luck~ |

I Love Thor Donating Member | Thanks everyone! It's nice to hear everyone else's stories. I think I am going to try the spray bottle thing first. Annadoodle~Where is the park? I would love to bring him there. I'm scared of bigger dogs ther though because he has a big mouth that the big dogs might think he's charging at them and Thor might get beat up! I don't want my little boy getting beat up on the play ground!! I would love to have a meet up there! Oh I'm gettin so excited thinking about it. Maybe the Raliegh area girls could get together sooner?! That would be so fun! My bf is buying me a camera this week becuase I think I lost my other one Anyways I can't wait to start taking pictures and I could take a bunch at the meet up! Whoo I'm getting excited an rambling!!! Thanks to everyone for their response! I will be getting a squirt gun tonight! Hannah |

| Please see the posting I just put under the Discussion board called "A bark collar that doesn't hurt your yorkie" at http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17299 I've tried rewarding Stomper for not barking by giving treats, telling him NO, putting him in the bathroom when he doesn't listen for 2 minutes, spraying him with a water bottle. None of these things worked for me. The citronella bark collar worked for me.
