| Finding a Trainer Sherman definately needs to learn some socialization skills along with walking skills, not barking skills, listening skills, and every other skill that a normal dog has... lol... so im in the process of trying to find a trainer. im trying to figure out what would be best for him... group classes, or individual classes, and trying to find a trainer in my area that seems to know how to work with his problems. this is one of the training facilities im looking at: WAGS & WIGGLES :: ABOUT US the price is a little high, but they seem well certified and do posotive reinforcement which is hard to find in my area. (for some reason everyone around here wants to throw a choke chain on your dog and call themselves the dog whisperer) ive emailed the lead trainer with my problems with all 3 dogs and want to see what she has to say.. but in your opinion.. does this look like a good place?

| I understand how you are feeling. I just had a trainer come to our house last night for the 1st of 6 sessions. My boys are both about a year old. If someone comes to the house they bark and carry on. I can't take them for a walk because if they see a person or dog they go crazy. It is so embarassing. With mine I can see I spoiled them. I am having to be trained also to set boundaries for them. I hated to spend the money but if it takes care of the problem it will be worth it. I also am taking them to daycare (separately) for socialization. I look forward to having someone come visit and having well mannered animals. Good luck!! |

i wish i could take them to day care to socialize but i just dont think theyd do well... im afraid sherman would bite another dog, and shasta is jsut so terrified of other dogs im afraid she would just be too stressed out.

| The place I took them to for day care has you pay $15 the first time to have them evaluated. Mine passed and were put in a "pee wee" group. They told me they didn't join in the play the first time but did a lot of sniffing and watching the other dogs. I guess it's baby steps. The trainer that came to the house said I needed to desensitize them from sounds. I take them in the kitchen and get ready to toss a lot of treats on the floor (like feeding the chickens) at the same time have another person knock on the door or ring the bell. They should want the food more than going to the door to bark. They woofed a few times but it wasn't worth giving up the treats. It's going to take a lot more practice to break them. She said if I keep working at it that they will eventually stop. I'll let you know if she was right. |
