| I have had it!!!! Krissy is almost 5 months. I am at a loss as to how to get it to click for house training. This is my first yorkie but not my first inside dog. We are kennel training and that was working. We thought she was getting the hang of it. We are also using the bell for outside. We were trying to give her more time out of the kennel and she has started to poop in the house and soemtimes pee. We have to young boys and so we really have a hard time watching her like a hawk. She is fast. She can be out of sight for one minute and then I find it! I just need reassurance that the time will come. |

| Yes, It is frustrating. I have two boys too. Keep at it and positively reward her when she does the 'right' thing. I look on the bright side when I get frustrated and remind myself that at least it isn't a huge laborador leaving that on my rug! (I am not trying to say it's no big deal but just keep your chin up.) Maybe someone else will come along and give you more advise to fix this problem. |

| Did I hear "We"? Thats the solution!!! I couldn't have done it without my husband!! Yes, they are FAST!!! And they learn real quickly to go behind-your-back!!Try tag-teaming the potty training sessions. If you can't watch, then either put the puppy in a crate or ask hubby to watch the puppy. Either way, don't allow any puppy freedom unless the puppy is being watched. Good luck!!

| Training is always an issue....... I have had Tobi since May and we have been through a lot in the training area. He was such a good puppy a few months ago. I had him trained to the litter box and bell trained also. That was great and then all of a sudden just in the last 6-8 weeks, he has turned into a terror!! He will stop and pee on the carpet right in front of me and he knows to go ring his bell or go to the litter box. I am at my wits end with this, why did he all of a sudden turn into a little monster. I realize that it is said that if he goes inside, it is my fault for not watching him like a hawk, but when are they held accountable for their actions, when you know, they know what they are doing. Also, He is a poop eater! I hate this!! What is a sure fire way to break that habit? Thanks for any and all suggestions

| Aw, I'm right here with you guys - it sucks. Nikko is getting close to 6months old (we've had him since he was 12 weeks), and he's not all the way there yet with potty training either. We're proud that it's been three days without an accident now! LOL, little victories. We're crate training/bell training as well, and I probably would have jumped off the roof by now if I didn't have so much help from my DH. Here's something I've started doing recently, if you want to give it a try too. Whenever he has an accident, we clean it with nature's miracle thoroughly, and let it dry. Then later that day or the next day, I drop a handful of his kibble on the floor around on that area for him to discover and enjoy eating (eating kibble off the floor is so much more fun than out of the bowl!). The idea is that he won't want to pee where he eats. It might just be a crazy idea, but the only places he has accidents now are places where he has never or rarely eaten kibble. I've started just randomly sprinkling parts of his meals in these areas daily, in the hopes that it might actually be making a difference. He used to pee next to the TV all the time until we cleaned it well and fed him there every day for about a week. Our hallway now looks like a kibble minefield :-) Lauren & Nikko |

| A dog trainer told me once that puppies can't control their bodily functions until 6 months of age. I did notice a change in my puppies at around 6 mos. But both of my boys couldn't really be trusted until 9 months. I'm sure every puppy is different. But for some reason, yorkies take a long time to 'get it'. Hang in there and take her out at least every hour. Eventually it will all click in her little brain!

| I hear ya! I NEVER thought that the day would come here Hiro would be trained. And here I am - he's 9 months now and I started training him at 15 weeks. I am pretty strict on where I keep Hiro, and even though he hasn't had an accident being outside of the crate so far, I refuse to give him free run of the house. They say that your dog isn't trained until a month free of accidents. We're working on it. Anyway, Yorkies are apparently notoriously hard to train, but just keep at it! Repetition and schedules are key! Say the same thing, take them to the same place when you want them to potty. Keep them on a schedule and make sure be able to recognize when they have to go potty! They will tell you through their actions, sniffing the ground, squatting, running in circles, etc! I didn't think I'd make it through potty training with all my hair, but here I am, and here WE are almost trained. It's been a long (and aggravating) road... but it's worth it. Hang in there!!!

| My girl just turned 6 months old today. She does let us know when she needs to go potty by running around like a "mad women". Though she still has times when she just goes in the house. It's maddening. The problem I have is she does potty in her crate. I got her when she was 12 weeks old and she had no training what so ever! She even messes on her blanket in her crate at night. I take her out right before bedtime and then I take her out before I go to work in the morning though it's pretty pointless because she has already messed in her crate. I know a dog isn't suppose to potty where they sleep, the other 2 I had, never did. Her crate is big enough for her to stand up, turn around and stretch out in. I am so at a loss with this. With all of that being said, I would not give her up for anything and love Yorkies. She is the 3rd one I have had in the last 30 years. Last edited by AbbysMom08; 02-12-2009 at 09:56 PM. |

| LOL, they do let you know, but wow it's not always easy to see. Much harder than I thought it would be. We're trying so hard to bell train Nikko, and there for awhile he was doing SO well! Then a series of problems sprung up that we didn't expect or plan ahead to avoid, and that we maybe didn't deal with in the best way... and now, even though we're still working on it, he doesn't bother to ring the bell anymore! But we've started noticing other signs finally... He'll walk over close to the door and look up at me if he needs to pee (usually, anyhow). Or if he needs to poo, he'll abruptly stop whatever he's doing as if he's startled (perhaps by the sudden feeling of poo needing to escape?), and run a handful of steps toward the door. It's anyone's guess what he'll do after that, so if we miss that first startled stop and run toward the door, we're outta luck... lol, it sure is a long road. But even now, as imperfectly as it's going, and as frustrated as I am sometimes that he's not fully trained yet despite all we've done so far, I can comfort myself just by looking back to a month or a couple months ago, and I can see that it HAS gotten better. When I go to bed every night, I dream of the day I can stop obsessing over watching Nikko, or feeling the carpet for wet spots, or buying nature's miracle. That day will come eventually, I have faith! Lauren & Nikko |

| OY! I'm not looking forward to the battles I'm reading about on here...lol. But I still can't wait to get my baby!! How exactly do you "bell train". I know what it is, but how do you teach the puppy to ring the bell?

| My babies both did not get potty trained until they were about 7 months old. My boy Bowden is really good and NEVER has an accident, he will hold it all day. The girl if I am not consistent with her will still have an accident occassionally. What I did to train them: Be consistent!!! Take them out every hour on the hour for a couple days. If you work, you can spend a weekend really enforcing this technique. Walk them until they go potty. Dog's like to walk and wander and you can't just stand outside and watch them and wait. Let their nose guide them as this is their sense they use to smell for a spot to go potty. Make a HUGE deal about it when they go, and give them a treat when they do. I know people don't agree with putting dogs noses in their accidents but I did it and it worked. They do not want to smell that and know when you are upset and will do anything to please you. Just remember be patient and consistent!!! |

| This is so hard! We have to watch Zeus like a hawk when he is out of his ex pen or crate. It works mostly except for a couple of incidents when we took our eyes off of him or he managed to escape. He is so fast!! Keep at it and I wish you the best of luck. |

| Don't give up. Your baby will get it. Mine is a year old and just now gets it! We still have to watch him as he won't bark to go out or even scratch at the door. (although he will to come in) But now the whole family is on board with making sure that Taz goes out very frequently so we don't have any accidents. I have even taught my children that if you are not playing with him or watching him, then he has to go back into his crate. This really helped with the house breaking. Theresa |
