| I need help with potty training! Ok so London will be 6 months old on the 27th. During the day she goes outside to pee and pooh. My problem comes at night. She was in a crate up until about a month ago. Hubby and I gave up on that one b/c she would cry all night and wake us up constantly. She still pottied in her crate instead of holding it and it was just horrible to clean every morning before school. So now she sleeps on her side of the room in her bed. She has 2 potty pads on her side to use but she doesn't. I take her out before bed and she just pees. I took her out twice last night! As usual we woke up to a mess at the foot of our bed. I don't understand. Someone please give me some advice. I am so tired of this. She goes outside before bed and has 2 potty pads in her area, but still goes on the carpet.

| I think you might be confusing her by using the pee pads. She goes outside the rest of the time but then you want her to use pads at night? She doesn't know the difference. Most 6 month olds should be able to make it at least 5-6 hours at night unless she has some sort of medical problem. Loki would pee IN his sleep and we found out he had some medical issues but it sounds like London is getting up and going on the floor, which makes no sense unless she just can't figure out how to tell you she needs to go out. How late do you give her water? I'd take water up at least 2 hours before bed and make sure she goes out multiple times after you take up the water. As far as going IN her crate, is the crate small enough? If she is going in her crate it could just be because she can't hold it, which again leads me to the water issue. She shouldn't be going in her crate. Is she maybe whimpering to tell you she needs to go out but you are ignoring it because you think she wants attention? I'm sorry it's so frustrating.

| Frustrating Hi there, I started a thread about much the same thing a little while ago and got some help. My problem is that my 10 month old has suddenly decided to miss the pee pads for anything other than a little piddle. She had a weird "relapse" kind of thing after reliably using the pee pads for months. Of course, her relapse started after she was spayed. It has gotten better recently. The advice I was given was to keep on her about it. When she starts to go, make sure she's on the pad -- I'll pick her up "midstream or mid-other" -- and then give her extreme praise as well as a treat for going in the right place. If she goes elsewhere and you catch her, giver her a stern "NO:" but don't use her name, just the no. (Want her name to be associated with good things all the time.) and withhold attention for awhile. It doesn't have to be very long (and with faces like little sweet Yorkies have, how could anyone ignore them for very long?!) That stuff has been working very well for the kind lady who answered me. She uses little bits of cheese (processed is less likely to cause binding) for rewards. I've been using Pure Bites freeze-dried chicken and/or beef liver. My girl gets excited for the reward and I really ham it up. This morning, there was "evidence" that she'd used the pee pad despite me being out to pick up my brother from the airport, so she may be on the way back to using it "full time" again. Hope that helps a bit. I understand how you feel. If you can believe it, my little girl was reliably using the pee pads more than 98% of the time when she first came home at 8 weeks old; I'd seen her using it at one month old during the pre-adoption visits. I was stunned when she just suddenly started having accidents.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I definitely know how you feel!! As we are all aware, yorkie's are NOT fun to potty train!! I literally thought I was gonna lose my mind (sounds like you feel that way too). I thought Lola would never be potty trained and I would be cleaning up her messes her entire life!! Don't worry!! That doesn't happen! Just be patient. They do get trained. It just takes way longer than other dogs. Until Lola was about 9 months - 1 year, she was having accidents all the time. I actually had to put down a bunch of wee wee pads on all the places she tended to go. She basically had a little bathroom area. If I saw her go on the pad I would praise her like crazy! Unfortunately if they miss, you just have to clean up the mess and move on with your life. That part is hard and very frustrating. Eventually though Lola rarely missed the pads. If you're patient, when your puppy is a bit older, they are able to hold it better. I have recently installed a doggy door which has been extremely successful, but Lola is 1.5 yrs old and can hold it through the night. I take her out right before bed, and first thing in the morning. They start getting into the routine. Patience is the key. I know it's tough, but just keep at it!! It's hard and frustrating but I promise she will do better as she gets older. You just need to be consistant and paitent. Jack is so good about holding it 8 hours at night but he wakes me up at 8:30am on the dot. But he does sleep with us. He hasn't gained free reign of the house just yet when we are gone. One thing I have been toying with is buying bells. They make ones you can hang off of door handles. This might be an idea for you to think about. You can hang it on the bedroom door handle so if she needs to she can ring the bells with her nose to let you know she has to go out. I wish you good luck.

| replies to all advice Thanks for the advice guys. London's crate is the smallest I could buy. I moved her from the crate to the half bath and that's working better. She peed on her pad like 3 or 4 times last night, but held her pooh till I took her out. My hubby has a cat that couldn't learn not to pee on everything and he has to live in his own room. He and my in laws (we live with them) are threatening to move London into that room as well. I don't want to lose my baby over this. I am thinking about making her live in a playpen in our living room so that I can still see and play with her. It will be big enough for her to have her bed, food, toys, and a pee pad. I can't have a doggie door because we have 4 cats and 2 big dogs. The big dogs stay outside and in the dog room, which is a workshop off the garage. London will be with them during the day while I'm at school. I will definitely try the bell thing. She is good about going to the door during the day but she doesn't make any noise just sits there and hopes I see her. Hubby yells at her for barking. Ok so I think that relates to what everyone posted. Sorry for the long post but yeah LOL so if anyone else has some suggestions just let me know.

| Hello Unfortunately one thing that might work for you is to wake up every 3 hours and let her out at night. I did that for a bit and finally it went to every 4, 5 hours etc. This will not give her a chance to pee inside. I know it might be tough at the beginning but well worth it. I disagree with hitting your yorkie hard on the nose. Hitting sets in fear in dogs. It needs to be a verbal reinforcement not physical. Good luck. |
