| HELPPPP ..How to do Pee pad and outside... Hello, We are brand new. I pick up my Laila tonight!! I am so excited! She is 6 months old. The breeder said that they would go on "paper." I have bought the pee-pads. My goal is to get her to go on the pee-pad if necessary (when we are at work all day, etc.) Then be able to go outside when we are home....is this possible?? Any help and advice would be appreciated!! I know NOTHING!! ** We just got her home and she doesnt seem to recognize the pads.. how should I get her used to going on them?? I am very nervous...about this whole thing!! Thanks! |

| here goes... okay, when i first got Kash, i confined him to the whole kitchen area with a baby gate while i was at work (8-10 hours). our kitchen is pretty big, and putting down just one pee pad wasn't cutting it. he would just pee all over the kitchen floor, but never on the pad. after coming home and finding puddles of pee on the floor everyday for about two-four weeks, i researched on YT, and found out he just had TOO much free space. so, i bought an x-pen, put his crate, food/water, toys at one end and a pee pad at the other end. he immediately went pee on the pad and never anywhere else in the pen. when i came home, i just took him outside once every hour. i think that way he understands, when mommy is home, i go pee outside, and when mommy isn't home, i go pee on the pad. he went potty on the pad for about 2-3 months, and now i think he just holds it until i get home because i can never see any pee on the pad anymore. it's always clean. for a while i was skeptical and i kept searching his pen for spots where he might have pottied, and i'd smell inside his crate (like his blankets and stuff), but alas, no pee. they eventually just get it. like now, he's almost 7 months old and he doesn't have to go potty once every hour. now, it's about once every 3 hours. sometimes i'll take him out and just stand there for what seems like forever waiting for him to potty and he won't! lol. oh, and he's also learned to scratch at the back door when he has to go. good luck, and let YT know if you have anymore questions!

Senior Yorkie Talker | It is possible to train them to do both. It might take a little longer for them to get the hang of the fact that when you are home they are supposed to go outside, but they will get it eventually. Just be patient. We don't use pads for Lola at my home anymore, but when we visit my mother we do. She knows when we are at home to go outside and when she is visiting grandma she should go on the pad.

| would a play pen work with the pee pad on one side and the crate or bed on the other, while we are home? We don't have our baby yet but we will sometime the middle of Aug. I am just trying to come up with a plan. I was going to use a play pen for when I could not pay close attention to her, I have three boys 9, 7, and 3 so I feel safer with her in a play pen out of my three year olds reach He might love on her to rough. If you have a better suggestion please let me know this is my first little dog, and it took me ten years to convince my hubby to let me have one his biggest problem was the mess that comes with them so i want to avoid as much as possible, I know accidents happen though. I am rambling just let me know what you think. Thanks Tess |

| Thanks Yokiesrock I may just have to get one of the slings and wear her like I did my kids when they were babies. I could not stand to listen to her cry. Thanks |

| I did the X-pen method and Katy Lou is very good about using her potty pad with holder. I'm not going to worry about her going outside until she has all her shots and I don't want to confuse her as she is doing so well. I think the trick to them crying to get out is to start out not giving in when they cry but to only let them out only when they are quiet. Otherwise they associate crying with "freedom". LOL When I put her in her little kennel for the night I cover it like the breeder did with a very light blanket. She fusses for about 30 seconds and then goes right to sleep. Also we have fans and A/C going so I think it is better to keep her covered at night. |

Donating Yorkie Yakker | know--I love the pads. You should see my reply on another thread in the training section. I don't know how to put it here on this reply. For Gabby- I have a large cage that I put a small pad in on one side and a towel on the other side. She could stay "clean" and had a space to potty. This was also her pen durring the day when I wasn't watching her. As she got older and better at going on the pad in the cage- I attached a short leash to a smaller cage in our family room. I put the pad on the outside of the cage-a blanket inside the cage with her food and the cage door open.. Now her potty area was outside her cage and she was still limited on how far away from it she got. I would reward her every time I saw that she had peed or pooped on it. It has taken months, but now Gabby is doing everything but pooping on the pads all of the time. |
