| Help with Potty Training Our Yorkie/Maltese, Haylee is almost 1 year old and we are having difficulty getting her to go outside. She originally was pad trained because we were in an apartment but she has been without the pad now since November when we bought our house. She was recently spayed and her accidents seem to be much more frequent now and usually in the same place (Bathroom rug). Could this be a result of the surgery? Many times she will go to the door and we let her out and praise her. What else can we do to stop these accidents? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Welcome to YT. I have to tell you that when your training a dog area rugs are a big draw to them. I would suggest either picking them up or keeping her away from those spots.

| Close the door to the bathroom. Pad trained dogs are attracted to area rugs. She probably just thinks you moved the pad. She doesn't know she is doing anything wrong. I bet she isn't even attracted to the scent so much as the rug. (If you haven't, wash it with an enzyme cleaner. That will help.)

| I haven't been able to have any kind of rugs on the floor since getting my yorkies. They are both pad trained and if they see a rug they will always go on it. I would suggest keeping them up atleast for a while until you are successful in potty training outside. I would think that maybe why she is having such a hard time right now is she has gone through tons of change in the last few months. With moving, having no pad to pee on, now getting spayed I am sure she feels her world is just upside down right now. Be patient and consistant. She will get the hang of it. |
