large dog & Yorkie puppy Ok i have 2 large breed dogs (German shepard X and an akita black lab) they both live outside except at night when the shepard sleeps inside (because she is 14 years old). we rescued the shepard (sam) from the SPCA. she was there for 6 months because she is an alpha female and is therefore "aggresive" towards other dogs. so my question is how should i introduce them without having a dominace fight break out between her and my little koda?

I would never trust any big dogs around a Yorkie period!! It only takes one bite, either in play or a fight , to loose your Yorkie. The big dogs can be the nicest dog on the block, but you can never trust them not to kill a smaller dog. Dogs will be dogs! There have been many threads on here about this and the loser is always the Yorkie. I have had many calls from people wanting to get another Yorkie after their big dog killed it. If they still have the big dog, none of my puppies will go to that home.

I have a 80 pound lab who's jealous of my 4 month old puppy. I never leave them alone or let them play together (Beau has accidently stepped on Pippin). I don't feed them together and I separate them when I give them treats. I am constantly on guard that Pippin doesn't try and play with Beau's toys. I agree with Yorkiekist, I would not trust the big dog. Small dogs can fight with each other, too, but the large dog can fit the puppy in it's mouth, and seriously harm it. I would introduce them slowly with something in between. Have the puppy in a pen and let the other dogs see and smell it but not be able to strike out at it. I hope it works out for you.

ok i tried the fence in between thing and the older dog pretty much lost interest and went about her business but koda was still trying to get at her to play. from past experience sam does not like this. should i just give up and continue to constantly seperate them?

Biting and aggression aside, even one accidental stomp or roll could kill a yorkie!

Far too many small dogs are killed by larger dogs either in the home or out and about. I discourage small dog ownership while a large dog is in the home. There are exceptions, of course but generally a bad idea to have large dogs with a Yorkie.

If you read what I said, there are exceptions. However, you try to deal with the fact your puppy you sold got killed by the other large family dog or killed by a large dog on the street.
