| New puppies After the new puppies are born do you need to tape their ears so they stand up? We have been told this needs to be done, but I have not seen anything saying that with all the research we've done online. |

| I'm not a breeder, but I know that some people do tape ears...I'm not sure how young you're supposed to start doing that. I think that usually people wait until the dogs are at least a few weeks old, as the ears may stand on their own.

| Not necessarily so. i usually give my new puppies a little shave on both sides of their ear . the top one third. not all the way down to the skin but just to thin the hair out. usually they will stand on their own. i give them time to do that. i tape at seven or eight weeks old if they aren't up by then. I have had them standing at three weeks old by doing nothing. in fact, most well bred puppies will stand the ears up on their own without you having to do anything. i have also had a sixteen week old puppy that I kept from my own breeding. her ears are a little large and kept falling over but finally at about sixteen weeks, they stood. i still shave my adult yorkies ears sometimes because the hair on the ears grows so fast and weights ears down. also, take some little blunt tip scissors and trim the edges of the ear hair being careful not to cut the puppy's ear. I usually wet my fingers and rub them around the edges of the ear. that way you can see to cut. |
