| had babies 13 days ago and............ Tootsie had her babies 13 days ago, she isn't spending alot of time with them, every chance she gets she is laying outside her kennel in my bedroom floor and leaving the babies by themselves, sometimes if they cry she doesn't act like it phases her, she was really attentive when they were first born. she doesn't seem to have much milk either(confirmed by vet) but babies seem healthy and are gaining weight. do you think she thinks she can't feed them? Also when i lock her in the kennel when i'm gone or at bedtime she poops in there and it is runny still and smells awful!!!! she was crate trained before is this a sign of not wanting to be a mommy? how can i stop the runny poop with her nursing?

| I'm afraid you won't see an end to the runny poop until she is done diapering the pups. As long as she is ingesting their pee and poo, she'll have runny, stinky bowel movements. As far as her spending less time with the pups, as long as they are gaining weight I wouldn't worry. Just keep an eye on their weight and praise her each time she nurses. The more she nurses the more milk she will produce as her body will go with the demand.

Perhaps Toostsie believes the whelping box is too warm? Last year when it was very hot in our area ( we do not have airconditioning ) our Roxy seemed to have very little interest in her puppies also, but in actuality her behavior was because she was trying desperately not too overheat her puppies. She would jump in just long enough to feed them for a few minutes and then jump out. She usually spent her time sitting near the entrance and this continued until the heat spell ended. It seems to me if the puppies are not fussy and are gaining weight that she is providing adequate milk. Just remember to continue weighing them on a daily basis. Good luck and congratulations !! </IMG> | |

| Surely she doesn't have an eye on the door this early (weaning). Moms will start to want to spend more time away, especially as those these come in. |

| If I had a mom who was being unattentive to her pups when they cry. My first thought would be giving her a bit more calcium in her diet. Try it and see if that helps. Try the pudding recipe http://lowchensaustralia.com/breeding/lactation.htm Appetite Stimulate for the Feeding Mother cup of plain yoghurt a teaspoon of raw honey some salmon oil two egg yolks water Whisk all together and feed at room temperature. You can continue to give this daily during the nursing period. Add oatmeal (soaked overnight) every now and then. Pudding Recipe for Nursing Mothers 1 x package Vanilla Pudding (cooked kind) 1/2 cup sugar 4 cups milk 4 egg yolks Cook on low heat to a pudding consistency. Feed at least 20cc twice per day, by syringe if necessary. If you don't have a package of vanilla pudding on hand you can mix the following in a saucepan and cook to pudding consistency. 2/3 cup sugar 6 tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 cups milk (or one can evaporated milk plus equal parts water to make quart) 4 egg yolks 3 teaspoon vanilla ** Hint Give your girl a drink of beer, warmed if necessary and with honey added. This can help to stimulate milk production. Uncontrollable diarrhea after whelping (when the puppies are born), and throughout most of lactation. This is most often seen when she must increase her food intake too much to meet the increased demands of lactational because the food she has been eating is poorly digested or low in calories. Good Luck Deana Prestigeous Yorkies Quote:

| Like somebody else said, as long as they're gaining and don't whine I wouldn't worry too much. Your thread reminded my of my first yorkie, Sally, ( she's now dead). She just acted as yours does when she was a first time mom. Her puppies would cry to feed and she either ignored them for a while or got with them, fed them for a very short time which was obviously not enough and ran off. I had to hold her still sometimes so that the puppies could suckle. I guess some don't have much of a mom temperament Post pics of them as soon as you can. Rubi, Jennie and pussy cat Mimosin |
