puppy question Does anyone know when mama stops stimulating babies to poop? My pups are four weeks old and two of them seem to be constipated. I have been trying to start feeding them for three days. i start weaning with esbilac puppy supplement, a drop or two karo syrup and a little gerbers baby rice cereal mixed to a watery paste. i am wondering if this is constipating them and I haven't seen mama stimulate them but I have seen them trying to poop with no luck. I fed the same last litter and had no problems. Don't know what's going on here.

I have had them stop pooping their pups around 4 wks and have also had one who cleaned up after hers for a good while. Normally I would say they usually stop from 4-5 wks. But you know how each litter is different. You could try omitting the syrup and start them on a very soupy, mushy puppy food. I have tried different puppy gruel recipes in the past for weaning but have found over the last year or so that using puppy food soaked in milk replacer and water, blended (very soupy for starters) and warmed a little has worked best for me. I spoon it onto a saucer, sit every one around it and individually offer it to them on a rubber coated baby spoon. Isn't it funny to watch them first starting to eat... they get more on them than in them at times, thank goodness for baby wipes, LOL! Hopefully they are just a bit constipated from the weaning process in general and it may pass soon. The only thing I can say is that my vet has assured me several times when I had worries that going from natural mom's milk to a replacer can cause changes in bowel movements. I would definitely keep stimulating them yourself as long as you have any concerns. Good luck with them!

Thanks, I think I am going back to the puppy food "soup" this morning since they seem to love mam's food. Someone had told me that it is hard on their stomachs tho at this age. that's why I switched the way i do things.
