| tail length Can anyone tell me if there is a set length when docking tails? I think my breeders vet chopped a bit too much from my little guy it doesn't stand like others I have seen. Tinksmomok |

You can check the AKC site to find out the exact length...The breeder that I bought Sadie from cut her tail way to short! Actually she has a nub...no tail at all..and Lillie(bought from same breeder) has more of a tail..I told her I wanted a tail...not a nub...I don't plan on showing so it doesn't really matter that much to me. but, I do like the look of some tail.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | AKC site says "docked to medium length," and that's what I've heard before. About in half. However, both my guys have tiny nubs. I wonder if it's a way for breeders to ensure that you won't show them and breed them? Nah, I'm probably being a bit too suspicious.

| Thanks, I couldn't find a length standard. As far as showing breeders have no choice in the matter as long as they are AKC registered and entering an AKC show. Breeders can only give a limited registration, which means you can't breed. Not all breeders do this. I am planning on showing my little guy in small club shows and wondered about the tail. I guess I shouldn't be too concerned since he is still a purebred and his tail is "human error" not breed. LOL Thanks for info Tinksmomok |

| I got this from AKC.ORG. According to AKC.org: Tail Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back. Hope this helps you! |

| I think the usual place is to dock them about 1/4 inch past the gold (into the black).

| tail We usually dock at the 2nd or 3rd knuckle. It's a matter of taste and what you personally like! But that's the standard that we use at work.

| I've always been told and seen it right above the gold. Like someone already mentioned, you can see where it starts to sort of 'narrow' there. |

| tail The problem with that is, not all dogs gold ends at the same place, which is how you get some shorter and some longer in the same litter. Most vets I know won't do it that way for that very reason!
