Our yorkie Birdie just had 4 beautiful babies. 3 girls and 1 boy. All around 4.5 oz to 5.5 oz. She had the babies in our bed, refusing whelping bed. One is nurseing good , hanging on tight. The other 3 dont seem like they are nursing yet. IS THIS NORMAL.....HOW DO i GET THEM TO LATCH ON.....any advise would be helpful.....Help....new to this.....Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Im going back to the forum and see if I can dig it up. I think I read how somewhere.....Anyways I woke up this morning to Birdie barking in her box next to our bed so I put her in bed with me and she seemed to fall right to sleep so I did too....Well I woke to a baby and thats how it all started. She refused the whelping box and laid between me and my husband letting us pet her and talk to her. She even let us help. What a good mom......Im so excited...

You may have to work with each pup one by one. Take one and put it to the nipple literally forcing its mouth open with your finger, you won't hurt it. just direct it to the nipple.

Once you get one going, get started on the next one. If that doesn't work, take hold of the nipple in one hand and the pup's mouth in the other. It'll kinda help it stick out more. Good luck.

take a teat, get the milk to surface then open the pups mouth and close it on the teat holding the muzzle down until they latch...they'll get the hang of it.

Just thought I would let you all know mommy and babies are doing fine. I fed the tiny one some formula, vet suggested, then put her back to bed with mom. Birdie is such a good mom and I am going to keep an eye on the bunch to make sure they are getting fed. They go to the vets Monday(appointment is set.) Wish I knew how to send pictures. I will try again. Thanks so much. Its been such a busy and exciting day for us all.....

Make sure they all nurse from their mamma. If it nurses from the bottle it will nurse from the mother. They tend to push up with their snouts....put them a little below the nipple and they will keep pushing upward and will latch on. The first milk is VERY important for the babies. Take them off of your bed if they are still there....these newborns get around amazingly well and will die if they fall from your bed to the floor. Please update us with how they are all doing.

Yes they are out of our bed with a lot of encouragement and putting our sheets in the playpen we have for them. I was so afraid they would fall too. I put a pillow on one side while my husband was sleeping with them but not for long and Birdie didnt want to move so put our sheets in with her and she was fine. Birdie is getting out of the pen now to go pottie and play with my husband ball but runs back and forth to check the babies. They seem all to be latching on so that worry is over. I keep checking them though. Its warm here today in Arizona so another worry gone. I guess I just worry . Lol. Thanks I will try the way you suggested if I notice any more problems with latching on. I sure dont want to feed them. Birdie likes the milk though and even wanted me to hand feed her her dry food. Shes playing this one up good........thanks again
