| First Time breeding question Hi everyone. I have a male Yorkie who is 8 years old and never been studed. We are trying to breed him with the female yorkie down the street. She has been in heat since Sept. 12 (that we know of) and she has been at my house during the day almost everyday since. Things are progressing. He is very interested in her, smelling, dry humping etc. and she is very flirtatious also- moving her tail over, sticking her but out, urinating.. However; no mounting has occured. My question is whether my male yorkie can figure things out. He has not tried to mount her at all and almost seems like he doesn't know exactly where it is... Are there only certain times during her heat that he will actually mount her? Any help is appreciated. |

| Usually the female is receptive about 10 or 12 days from the onset of bleeding, but it can vary from dog to dog. Your female is definitely showing signs of being ready. At 8 years your dog should be fertile, but I have no experience any studding one this age for a first time. I have heard of older studs than 8. You may have to help him find which end, if he will let you. If he has been discouraged from humping and never mated. He might do better while you watch from a location that he can't see you. When the tie takes place though make sure you are there to hold everyone still so no one gets hurt. |

| I really don't know the answer to your question but if he has never been bred before he might not know what to do and he may need your help. There is a website that tells you everything about breeding and it has a section on how to help guide the male and female when they are breeding. Here is the link www.debbiejensen.com. Good Luck!!

| i bred my male for the first time 5 months ago. he is 6 years old. i kept him locked up all day with the female, nothing. about day 10 i really tried getting them together. the only time he would really try was when he was outside. he would try for hours and he could never find the spot. i remeber one night i stayed outside till 10 hoping they would tie and nothing. finally he figured it out and my dogs got stuck. of course they were in the back yard and my husband comes in the house yelling go get your dogs gizzie is dragging bastian and hes crying. i had to sit outside and pet my girl so she would calm down. they got stuck one other time and she had pups. i suggest being patient and let him dry hump he should find it. |
