I was just wondering what kind of genetic testing or any kind of testing you have done on this male . It needs to be done before studding him out. My little male is under four pounds and I am ready in a couple of months to start my testing. Just don't really know where to start but hope to learn here.

Hi there! I have talked to my vet and they recommended testing, especially for Brocella (Sorry the spelling might be totally off) Anyway, once I find a mate for my male, I then will setup the appointment to get all tests done. I also will probably have an agreement for mate to get tests done and signature from vet that this has been done. I want my male safe as I want the female safe as well!

Hi there. I am a fairly new yorkie mama myself but I have been researching my bloodlines and learning all I can about the breed and how to breed. i hope to eventually be a breeder. What I know at this point is that before you stud your male out (or breed your female) the dogs need to be tested for several common genetic defects that yorkies are prone to. Liver Shunt and Luxating Patella being the two worst. They both also need to be tested for STD's. You need to research both the pedigrees to see if anyone back in their history has any problems that your dog may not have now, but could pass on. Also, on the male, you need to have a sperm count done. I know this is not much information but it is about all I have learned so far.

breeding I was watching the Dog Whisperer on Sunday..his show was about Katrina rescues. It was very interesting..males are progammed to breed, it consumes a major part of their thinking..now I knew that was the way human men work, but not dogs! LOL If you breed your male, you need to keep breeding him or you will have a very unhappy, frustrated dog..my males were used at least once a month..sometimes twice and quite easy to life with as a result. Something to think about..once you start a behavior it is not easy to turn off.

Great points! I really need to see this Dog Whisperer! Everyone always raves about it! Anyway, let me know if anyone knows another way to find a girlfriend. I know the paper is an option...just feel like I might get some not so honest people if I try that route.

i'm not a breeder but i would think you would need to get all your ducks in a row, the tests done and pedigree records available BEFORE you find your would-be stud a girlfriend. a respectable girl's gotta know what the stud has to offer before committing to anything

to breed or not to breed you might read a lot of books on breeding before you take on this. Do you know that most female will need a c section and most only have one or two puppies. The smaller the dog the more problems you could have. Good luck Hanna
