| Oxytosin I'm very familar with oxytosin. I've had to use for dogs as well as sows. I was wondering what other breeders felt about oxy. I don't keep in on hand when delivering pups but I'm also new to delivering small breed dogs. What are your thoughts on this. Do you feel strongly on having it ready in case or not? Are you for using oxy or feel it's better to keep the meds out of it? I know alot of you out there have bred yorkies way longer than i have so I would really appreciate your thoughts on this..

| Oxytocin I do keep oxytocin on hand.. I only use it when I believe the mama needs help and at the end of whelping to make sure all the placentas have been removed.. As we know that if a placenta is left in the mama it will turn toxic! Although the use of oxytocin is not to be taken likely! If NOT used properly it can blow the mamas uterus! So please be very careful when using oxytocin and only on the advice of your vet.. |

| If I did use it I"d get it from my vet. I don't use any meds unless they come from him..I"ve used oxy several times but never on such a small dog. I do have some concerns giving it to her. Have you ever run into problems giving any of your yorkies oxy?

| I always have it on hand. I purchase it from vet about a week before due whelp so that it will be fresh. I don't always have to use it but sometimes better judgement will tell us that we need to. Other times it isn't even necessery. |

| Wanted to add..oxytocin does not always work and isn't a cure all after whelp. No one should use it unless under the strict advice of a vet on call. |

| I have not had personal experience with rupturinga uterus but it has happened to another breeder. The cervix MUST be dilated and the whelper-helper must know how to do an internal exam. If your vet says it is okay to use, who will calculate the does(s)? Will the vet let you come into his/her office and administer the oxy the first time you use it so you can learn the difference between giving IM and suq-Q? And, then, montor the situation with you til at least one puppy is born after the injection? As you can guess, I have concerns about proper use of it. And, BTW, I do use it and I did stay all afternoon in my vet's office the first time I gave it. And, I am a nurse with a hundred years experience but it still makes me nervous.. |

| I've heard breeders use it at their discretion of course after years and years experience. I prefer to let my vet handle the admistering it. |

I honestly believe that you need to ask your vet if he/she recommends that you should keep it on hand.. All whelpings are different.. I always have it on hand, but I have very rarely had to use it.. I think that there would be a GREATER risk for error when using it on a toy breed dog than a sow.. JMHO.. My vet would not have felt comfortable sending it home with me if I had not used it when I was working as a vet tech.. Sorry probably not what you wanted..

| I'm sorry i'm getting frustrated but i must not me saying what i'm asking right..what i'm trying to say..not should i use it..but do you use it or do you prefer not to and prefer to leave that up to the vet. I don't use it..I go to my vet immediately anytime ANY problem arises. I was just curious to what other breeders felt about oxy. I doubt I will ever use it in my home. I was just letting you all know that I knew how to ect. ect. trying to avoid being told how when I already know. All I was wanting was what other breeders thought about it. I'm sorry if i'm getting frustrated. It's alot easier to talk in person than like this..

| awww, don't get frustrated...you had a legitimate question and i tried to answer it as far as I go...i keep it on hand, yes. I use it if i feel it nessecery if my vet on call agrees. Only then. Now on the other hand I would rather her administer if needed, but sometimes that is not an option if mom decides to go at 2 am. It's good to have a vet like mine who will actually answer the phone at that hour if needed and would get up and meet you at the clinic if it came to that. I feel confident enough to administer if she gives me the "go". My yorkies are my children and I would never give them anything that I was not 100% confident and experienced with in the first place. This was a good topic by the way! Best wishes, |
