after whelping? I am calling my vet, but they don't open for another 45 mn, so I thought I would see if this is normal. Libbie had her pupppies by 7 yesterday morning, we took her in for her shot at 9:30. She is eating chicken, yogurt, dry puppy food and cottage cheese. She went out to potty last night about 2am and I think she exploded! Her whole hind end was covered in dark, really smelly poop. I cleaned her up, and she has gone out since and it is not all over her, but it smells terrible. Could it be from all the dairy products that she isn't used to eating? She usually is only on dry dog food, so all this other stuff is not normal for her to eat. She is taking really good care of her babies, eats and drinks and goes outside to potty without me taking her so other than the whole diarea thing she is doing well. I just wondered if smelly diarea is normal?

I know that after my two girls whelped they had some loose really dark poop because of eating the afterbirths. I don't remember it being smellier than normal though. I hope that helps - I am sure someone with more exp. will post more info. (probably as I type this!) It never hurts to call and ask a question though!!

She did eat 2 afterbirths. She has gone a couple times since and it hasn't been near as bad as the first time, so I am thinking it is probably ok, but it definately smells bad, she was having gas last night and I thought my kids were gonna crack up. They had ever heard a dog have gas before I guess!

| I suggest take her temp..that's always a good indicator if there is an infection. Congrats, keep us posted!

I agree with Kim...check her vital signs. But. also be cautious about dairy products in larger amts. Some dogs just do not tolerate lactose just as hoomans do not. I would give her some calcium tabs (we all have our preferences), crushed egg shell, and maybe start with a little cottage cheese or yogurt. They do get GI upsets after eating those placentas and it can be as you describle. Try giving her lots of water and dry puppy food and I always give BeneBac or acidophilus to my moms and puppies. Let us know what your vet says..And please be careful about exposing those new babies to the diseases that are ever-present in the vet's office..

Thanks for all your help. She is doing really well, I think it was just all the dairy and the placentas. Her vital signs are good and the vet said not to bring her in unless I was really worried and I think she is ok. How do I post pics in a thread? I have them I just don't know how to get them to a thread. Oh, I weighed them and they all gained except the tiny boy and he dropped from 2 7/8oz to 2 3/4oz but that is to be expected the first day right?

| Weight loss is normal the first 24 hours BUT if you continue to see weight loss (I weigh them 3-4 times a day for the first week or two) on the tiny one, make sure he is placed on the teat often....If needed suppliment the largest one so he/she doesnt become a teat hog...get the little one on as much as you can! How many in the litter?

new mom I start my girls on a "beefed" up diet slowly..usually at 5 weeks along I start adding extras...so by whelping time they have had time to adjust ...afterbirths can cause loose stools..I am sure your vet will give her some meds to stop it.

My husband thinks that it was from her oxy shot. It was dark and kind of coffee ground tarish. I never thought I would be discussing my dogs bowel movements, I guess it isn't any different than my human babies She is doing much better, I am giving her half a tums in the am and pm and yogurt twice a day (which she loves) about a tablespoon, all the dry kibble she wants(royal canin puppy) and some beef and chicken several times a day. Does that sound like it should be ok? I don't want to overdose her on the dairy and she isn't crazy about cottage cheese so I am not giving her that anymore. She is eating really well, I try to give her something every 2 hours at least and she gobbles it up. She had 4 puppies so I know she needs everything she can get. I can just sit and look at them all day, I am not getting anything done!! If anyone knows how to attach the pics will you let me know, I took some I just can't post them Thanks Melanie

I think that normally a Yorkie needs 200mgm of calcium a day. Nursing moms need at least twice as much so if she is getting a good portion of puppy food(check the CA content in the food) and 200mgm of elemental calcium from the tums she should be okay. As usual, the best advice is from Pat. Yes, a whelping female needs a portion of the palcenta because of the hormones that cause a number of normal changes in the mother's body..just like hooman moms. Think about this--if a mom has that placenta inside her uterus for 9 weeks, how in the Sam Hill can eating it cause an infection? Now, that one blows my mind.. Sorry, but sometimes I lose patience with these types of statements. I apologize if I hurt your vet's feelings but that does not make sense to me.. Anyhow, I have no helpful ideas about the pics-Villette posts mine. But as for the doggie part, sounds like you are on the right track. Some things we can prevent and some things we have to treat. The trick is knowing which is which..
