I have a female in her second heat. She is in standing heat and I'm using someone else's male. She's never been bred and he's never bred before. She's 7 lbs and he's 3-1/2 lbs but he can reach her. I've tried just about everything that I know of and still can not get them to lock up.

Do any of you breeders have any suggestions or is there something wrong with the male or female? This is my third day of trying.

Is he trying? Or is he not interested? They really don't have to lock/tie for her to become pregnant, but it helps! Can I ask how you know she is ready?

He tries his heart out and is very interested!! On his first try(of putting them together), his penis will come all the way out and he just keeps missing. Then after that he pumps(I know graphic) and his penis will only come out a small amout and then he gives up on that try but then will try over again until he's just pumping and no penis emerges.

Her bleeding has stopped, she stands, lifts her tail and also puts it to the side. She has even moved to try to guide him, which I thought was impressive for the first time. She's on day 9 and had stopped bleeding before then.

Hope I'm making sense.

Are you sure he can reach her? It sounds like hes close but not close enough. Will he let you put him on a pillow behind her? This will bring him up a little higher and may halp him get closer.

I have done that, still with no results. I have the little puppy couch and have put him on top of that and she stands below and I still get the same result. It's like the perfect height, he starts out, works hard, and then just gives up

Char...if it's too big...out of the shaft, it's going to be hard to get it in. You will have to lift him up by his bum and position him right on her vagina. Slowly apply pressure to his bum so he can feel that she is there. He should do it from there but if he is too excited, you're going to have difficulty and it's not going to go in.

Been there...done this!

Wow! You say she's standing on day 9? Isn't that unusual? I guess they all have their own schedule, but 9 sure seems early!

Be sure to continue trying until about day 16-17. At least, that's what I would do.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep trying. She was definately standing on day 9 and of course is still standing.

How do you learn unless you ask? Maybe I should have taken it to emails. I know that I have had other people pm me now wanting to know how to accomplish this because they have tried and couldn't. Exactly! How DO you learn unless you ask. And since this was posted on the Breeder Talk, I think most all breeders have "been there, done that" so I can't see why anyone would be offended. At least any breeders I know of would not be. I know dog breeders, horse breeders and if you get them in a room discussing things, this would just be normal conversation. Nothing to be offended about.

Glad they made the connection. I had trouble with my little Joey at first, used pillows, catalogs, then I had my girl face me, put each hind leg between my thumbs and first finger with the rest of my fingers pointing in back of her and then he stepped on my hands and bingo! That's how he did it every time. Never pictured myself doing that. Ha Ha Ha

Thank you for being graphic...maybe it will discourage some back yard breeding...and this is a great place to ask questions; if someone is upset about this being graphic they are just reading the wrong thread....
