| Breeder red flag? I'm new to the boards, and decided it's time to make my first post! I've been doing my research on searching for a good breeder and have learned the best way to start is on the YTCA website breeder referral list. Well yesterday I began to make calls and started with the breeder nearest to me on the list. She was very nice and answered many of my questions. One of my questions was how many shots the puppy will receive before I take her home? She then went on to explain they will have two shots by the age of 9 weeks, which is when I can take her home, on the condition that I keep them inside for 3 weeks until they get their third shot. This is where I became concerned because from what I've read puppies normally don't go home until 12 weeks. Well anyways she did inform me that I could just wait to pick my puppy up at 12 weeks when they were done with all 3 shots, but just normally people are too excited to wait that long. I told her that I would rather do what's best for the puppy and keep it there for 12 weeks. Wheeww sorry for the long post, but now my question would be is this a red flag and should I stick with this breeder or find someone else? |

| I'm not too helpful here, but I would think that since she's able/willing to keep pups til 12 weeks and would send them home early on conditions tells me she's at least moderately concerned about her dogs welfare. I'd take it as a red flag if she wanted you to pick the pup up early, no questions asked, no conditions made. But that's more of a personal thought than a professional opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | To me, yes it is a red flag for 2 reasons. The first is the 9 week thing. A great breeder doesn't care if you want the puppy early. They are going to do what's right for the pup. That means maximum socialization time with mom. The second is the idea of 3 series of shots by 12 weeks. I believe in holding off on immunizations in small dogs until at least 8 weeks and then following Dr Dood's protocol. Others will disagree that they need to wait, but it's at least something to look in to.

Good catch! Vaccinations should be started no earlier than 8 weeks old, given every 3 weeks until 3 shots are given, and that will get the puppy vaccinated completely by the time they are released to new homes at 14 weeks old, which is what is best for the puppy! | |

| I forgot to even address the psychological benefits of leaving the puppies with mom and siblings until they are 14 weeks old...emotional and psychological development is crutial for puppies and the lessons they learn from momma and siblings from/during weeks 7-14, are priceless and are instrumental in preventing behavioral problems later in life!!!! I appreciate how excited new owners are to get their new baby....but they also want a healthy, well socialized puppy....amd that is MY responsibility, so I do what I know is best for the baby! You could report this breeder to the YTCA letting them they aren't following the rules. I know I would certainy do it.

| Thank you for the replies. She seemed like the right breeder up until that comment, and I was so excited to begin working with her. It's so discouraging to hit a dead end, but my search will continue until I find the right breeder. On the bright side I do have time because I don't plan on adding a fur baby to my family until the beginning of next year or so |

YT 1000 Club Member | I would continue searching. Granted the person sounds nice and is a member of the YTCA, it is still not good for the pup to have had 2 sets of vaccines at 9 weeks not to mention going to a new home early. Vaccines should not be started til 8 weeks and should receive a second set before going to their new homes. I like for new owners to meet me at my vets office when they go in for their 2nd set that way any questions or concerns they have they can ask the vet directly. To me having the new owners there is better than getting a piece of paper saying the pup is healthy. I know that not everyone can do that but for me if they are able to be there it is better for all concerned.
