| Help! Mother just had her baby. She won't stop licking it its turning red she's licked it so much. Plus she won't keep in play pen where heating pad is. She climbs in bed with puppy in bed with me. Ever time he try's to eat she starts licking again. |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Licking sounds fairly normal; it's a way they clean & bond with their pups. Not sure about the pup being red from it??? Licking could also be done as a nervous tendency; she might be a nervous "new" mom. Is she is a quiet place away from any other activity/dogs in the house? She & her pup should stay in her pen, not in bed with you. Can she get out of the pen herself? If so, get something she cannot get out of. Make her stay in there, talk to her & reassure her that she & her baby are fine. Soothe her while the puppy nurses if that's what it takes to have her not lick the pup while he nurses. You might have to sit by her side for a while until she is comfortable in her new role as "mommy". Relax and enjoy.................and she will do the same. Good luck to you & congrats.

she needs to stay with the pup. I sleep in the puppy room with mama and puppies for a week, to assure her that is ok for her to stay with the babies. hugs, | |
