English Bay Kennels

Has anyone heard of English Bay Kennels in Burnaby BC? I was hoping that they are good breeders, however seeing their ad on kijiji made me suspicious.

This is their ad,
Teacup doll faced Yorkie puppies - CKC registered purebred - Burnaby/New Westminster Dogs & Puppies For Sale - Kijiji Burnaby/New Westminster Canada.

I am not sure why a reputable breeder would advertise as 'Teacup' yorkies. Please share your thoughts.

I don't even have to click on the link and look to tell you they are not a good breeder. No good breeder uses the word teacup.

Expecting Dam is only 3.8 lbs. Plus they advertise teacups, I say RUN, don't walk!

I don't know much about them except they haven't been around long and definitely a reputable breeder does not use a female so tiny for breeding . Teacup is a big red flag.

Thanks. I was under the impression that they are good breeders. In fact when we saw their last pup (Tyler) we thought he is adorable. Also, whenever we had called them, a lady had answered and she was more than happy to assist us. But we got confused after reading 'Teacup' ad on Kijiji!!

Here is a list of red flags to look for when you are considering a breeder. Check and see how many (if any) of them apply to any breeder you are considering.

* Dogs not being bred to meet the breed standard. (Which means you have to have a good understanding of what the standard is first.)
* Dog that are unregistered
* Breeding multiple breeds instead of just one
* Breeding mutts/designer dogs/mixes/crosses
* Breeders who have multiple litters in a very short amount of time
* Advertising dogs as "teacups" or "minatures" (micros, teddy bears, etc)
* Breeders using females that are too small (under 5 lbs for breeding)
* Extremely cheap dogs--breeding comes with costs, extreme low prices suggests they are cutting corners somewhere
* Pet store dogs (these are supplied by puppy mills)
* Breeders that do not perform health testing on pups and parents (specific health tests, not just "vet checked")
* Releasing pups at a very young age---6 wks, or 8 wks. For Yorkies, releasing them around 12 weeks is preferred
* Breeders who don't place dogs on spay/neuter agreements
* Not having a sales agreement with health guarantee

I just didn't think a reputable breeder would ever breed females under 5 lbs. for the increased risks to their health.

I was told to visit the Canadian Kennel Club to get a list of reputable breeders. English Bay Kennels is listed with them as being a reputable breeder, yet they use the term "Teacup", and several members here have said to stay away from them, because no reputable breeder uses the term "Teacup.". So WHY on earth is this breeder listed with the Canadian Kennel Club??? .

Actually no club can verify if a breeder is reputable or not. No kennel listed with the Canadian Kennel is verified as being reputable. It means the breeder is a member of the CKC, they have paid an annual fee for the membership and pay a reduced price for registering their dogs and puppies and transferring ownership. A membership can be revoked if the breeder sells/breeds cross breeds, suspended for a time if they do not supply the registration certificate for any dog or puppy they sell, the dog or puppy must be either microchipped or tattoo identified. Breeding practices are not really addressed other than you can't do crossbreeds if you are a member.
As a member of the CKC there is a Code of Ethics a member is supposed to abide by. The prospective buyer still have to do their homework before dealing with any breeder. Most breeders who are very interested in their breed are also members of one or more breed Clubs as well, in our case, there are Yorkshire Terrier Clubs. Canada has the CAnadian Yorkshire Terrier Club. In the US there is YTCA but also many areas of the US also have breed clubs for example YT Club of Greater New York. Again these Clubs do have Codes of Ethics etc but you still need to check out the breeder you are considering getting a puppy from.
Being armed with the info about the 'teacup', breeding especially females that are too small, genetic health guarantees is all good information to know about.

I guess I should mention I am in Canada, been a show breeder for 20 years now. I recently received my 20 year long time membership pin with the Canadian Kennel Club.
