| Breeders about dewirming...? Don't take this offensive please, perhaps asked out if naivety. I see so many breeders say they deworm pups. Does every breeder deworm pups is it standard? Do you do fecals to check for worms first, not cost effecient, not reliable, no harm in deworming if no worms anyways? I have to be honesty, yall already know I'm opinionated and mouthy, but all this makes me wonder do all these dogs from breeders have worms? It is almost concerning to me to imagine all these worm filled dogs. Is it pups get them before they can take like revolution or ivetheat plus etc? I just don't get it so maybe some breeders can enlighten about worms. Elvis arrived to me with a severe whip worm infection but my pup mill rescue was never dewormed and didnt have them, so its not a tell all on treatment, I'm just curious.

YT 1000 Club Member | I personally don't do deworming unless there is a need to. When I take my pups in for their shots they get a fecal check and so far knock on wood they have all been negative. My vet says no need to treat them for something they don't have.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I always do fecals on my puppies first, my girls do not carry worms to their litters, so is no need to deworm my puppies unless the fecal comes back positive, I don't beleive in giving the young pups so much poison if not necessary, but i know breeders that deworm without fecals just to say they did. My mentor always say is a matter of personal choice for the breeder. I choose to test first. hugs, |

| I found this explanation from a breeder about her worming program. She explains in detail WHY she deworms puppies, development of the stages of worms, etc. Based on evidenced based research, I agree with her rationale, her program for deworming, her choice of wormer, and I too deworm my puppies based on this same rationale. I try to prevent problems, rather than treating them after they have arrived. ~~"THESE PARASITES HAVE ‘LIFE STAGES’, WHICH BASICALLY CONSIST OF EGG, LARVAE, & ADULT. ONCE THE EGG HATCH AND DEVELOP INTO LARVAE THEY MIGRATE INTO THE TISSUES OF THE BODY. WHEN A PUPPY IS EXPOSED AND HAS BEEN GIVEN THESE PARASITES THEY CAN MIGRATE WITHIN THE SKIN, MUSCLE, AND LUNG TISSUE’S, BEFORE DEVELOPING INTO THE ADULT STAGE IN THE INTESTINAL SYSTEM. A SMALL PORTION OF THE MIGRATING LARVA WILL BECOME ENCYSTED (ENCLOSED IN A SAC OR CYST) WITHIN THE MUSCLE, AND LIE DORMANT, ESSENTIALLY ‘LAYING IN WAIT’ FOR MONTHS EVEN YEARS BEFORE RESUMING DEVELOPMENT. THIS PUPPY IS DEWORMED THROUGH OUT PUPPYHOOD AND EVEN PUT ON PREVENTION. SO WHY DOES THIS PUPPY THEN GROW UP AND EXPOSE ‘HER’ YOUNG TO THE PARASITE? DURING PREGNANCY AND WHELPING, THE ENCYSTED LARVAE IN THE DAM (MOTHER DOG) ARE STIMULATED BY HORMONES TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP FROM THEIR EXISTING STATE. THIS STAGE OF THE PARASITE AS WELL AS THE EGGS OF THE PARASITE CAN PASS THROUGH THE MAMMARY GLANDS TO INFEST THE INFANT PUPS WHEN NURSING. IN SOME CASES PUPPIES ARE BORN WITH THEM AS THE PARASITE CAN ALSO PASS THROUGH THE PLACENTA AND INFEST THE UNBORN PUPPY. SO THE CYCLE IS A CYCLE THAT CAN BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL, WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO THE VET AND HAVE THEM TO DO A FECAL EXAM TO CHECK FOR PARASITES. IF THE TEST IS POSITIVE, HAVE THEM DEWORM THE PUPPY. WHILE AT THE VET HAVE THEM PRESCRIBE HEART WORM PREVENTATIVE WITH EXTRA PARASITE CONTROL (INTERCEPTOR, HEARTGARD PLUS, ETC) THIS WILL KEEP THE PUPPY FROM REINFESTING THEMSELVES. HERE AT OUR KENNEL, WE USE STRONGID-T ON OUR INFANT PUPPIES AND OUR ADULT FEMALES THAT ARE IN WHELP (PREGNANT) AS IT IS THE SAFEST DEWORMING PRODUCT ON THE MARKET AND IS WHAT YOUR VET USES. THIS DEWORMING MEDICATION RIDS THE PUPPIES OF ADULT ‘WORMS’, HOWEVER THE SAFE PUPPY DEWORMER DOES NOT RID THEM OF THE EGGS, OR LARVAE. THIS IS WHY YOU AND YOUR VETERINARIAN MUST KEEP THE CYCLE UNDER CONTROL BY CONTINUING TO DEWORM, AND DURING THEIR VERY FIRST VISIT TO YOUR VETERINARIAN TELL THEM YOU WANT YOUR PUPPY STARTED ON HEARTWORM PREVENTION NOW. THE HEARTWORM PREVENTION HAS AN ADDED INGREDIENT TO BREAK THE CYCLE AND CAN NOW BE STARTED AS YOUNG AS 8 WKS OLD." (She had written this in all caps....I know this sends some people into a tailspin....for once I can say, "I didnt do it", although it bothers me not.) |

| My puppy arrived with no worms. The breeder gave her 3 worm treatments and the vet went ahead and gave her a worming treatment anyway, just in case the breeder used an over the counter wormer which only kills 2 types of worms. She tested negative anyway, so arrived with no worms. All puppies have worms. |

♥Love My 3 Furrbutts♥ Donating Member | I was under the impression that all puppies are born with worm...passed from dam to pups. My 8wk old (still with momma) was at the vet yesterday...she was wormed, vaccinated and microchipped. From what my breeder tells me all is well, she will be wormed again before i bring her home.

| Thank you everyone who replied. A lot of atuff I didn't know. Caps make reading on my phone easier to do. I did fecals on all my dofs when I got them and we did pancor? To deworm Elvis and then we did Iverheart Plus and now Revolution so we only do anual fecals, I'm just a pet ownet so ... Am I right in thinking then even if a dam is on like a heart whip tape and the other worm med monthly her pups would need to be dewormed not just as a precaution from her but general environmental concerns...like who knows a larva or egg could come in off your shoe abd infect the pup. So thinking all breeding stock dogs might be worm ridden is silly its all about prevention and protection.

| I personally do not deworm unless the fecals come back with worms. I prefer to only treat if they do in fact have worms. Usually, I have had to issues. I do watch the stools carefully too. |

| When I do have puppies which is far and few between I don't deworm unless necessary! Why would I want to treat something they don't have? Only thing I do is heartworm prevention! I do not like giving things that aren't necessary! Donna |
