Please help me find info re: 12 weeks optimum age for sale - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Our first yorkie came home at 9 weeks. We know, from months of YT that 12 weeks is the best time to get your pup. My DD is currently waiting on her Biewer to turn 12 weeks.

I have friends who are insisting that we get her now (I'm sure breeder wouldn't do that) that we are missing out on premium training time. Do you know of any resource or link I can use to prove my point. I don't think they would read through a lot of threads and I would really like to educate them. Thanks for any info.

At what age should the pup be when you bring it home? No one should bring a Yorkie pup home younger than 12 weeks of age. Why? Yorkies can easily get hypoglycemia - low blood sugar, brought on by stress. This stress can be as simple as moving to their new home if younger than 12 weeks of age. Think about when you have made a move in your life. Yes, it is very stressful. Research has proven that a move is the second highest stress in ones life other than a death in the family. Any breeder that tells you that their vet said it was okay for them to leave to their new home younger than 12 weeks, either does not know yorkies well or they do not care and want to not have to clean up potty from a puppy. Puppies make a bigger mess when they are from 8 weeks and up. When you have a litter - that can be a big mess and a lot of work. This is the main reason unreputable breeders want their pups to leave early. So do not be fooled.

I think this site explains why it's important for the toy breeds to stay longer with their mother. Why do Maltese puppies need to be 12 weeks old before going to a new home?? By the way some breeders are keeping the longer because you can't have a valid bile acid test until 16 weeks. A good mama dog helps train the puppies for housebreaking. She licks them clean, so that they get use to being clean and she nudges them to the pee pads when she smells they have to urinate. She also teaches inhibition of the biting reflex, which is so important. As long as you are buying from a good breeder who keeps the mama with her babies, they will learn things you can't teach them so easily.

If this dog is to be in YOUR house and there are people out side of your house grumbling. They dont get a vote. I have had toy dogs come home to me at 8wks and then my yorkie at 13wks. There is soooooo much difference in how they handle the separation from mommie dog and the new surrounding.

If you have a good breeder.. she won't let her puppies leave until at least 12 weeks old.. they should have at least 2 sets of shots.. they need to be approx. 4 weeks apart.. you wouldn't want to start puppies on shots prior to at LEAST 7 or 8 weeks old.. so.. 12 weeks old MINIMUM!

Smaller pups should stay even longer so they can better handle the stress of move and the new environment/routine. There is no reason to send puppies out to soon, the longer they can stay with mom/siblings, the better off they will be. Socializaton skills are tought by mom and the rest of the pack.. these skills are invaluable in future training with your family and for the rest of your puppies life..
