| Sadie had an ultrasound Took Sadie to the vet this morning because she started throwing up again today. Vet did and x-ray, did not like the way it looked so she did an ultrasound and Sadie has three puppies with very strong heartbeats. Vet also gave me a can of bland dog food to try seeing how she is still refusing to eat, I gave her a little when we got home and she ate it and now she is sleeping. Vet says she is in the very first stage of labor and this could take up to a week. The vet also says everything looks real good for a great delivery but that if there is any complications to bring Sadie to her right away. I feel a little at ease now and maybe I can get some sleep tonight. |

Sadie is now 50/51 days along, going by your posts. I'm at a loss why your vet said she is in the first stage of labor. Not sure what he calls labor but I've never seen where it could last that long. First stage labor usually lasts up to 24 hours. I've never seen it said anywhere that it can last a week. She shouldn't be showing any labor-like symptoms yet, and if so, you'd have to question whether or not it's a symptom of some other problem. I know you said earlier that you are comfortable with this vet, but he's done some questionable things IMO. First, he does an x-ray way too early (the one about 2 weeks ago) to tell anything. He also recommended calcium supplements...something universally not recommended during pregnancy. Now he says she's in labor at 51 days? Frankly, I would be more worried for her getting enough nutrition and possibly becoming anemic, hypoglycemic or pre-eclampsic. Did he do any blood work on her? Being picky is one thing but at a certain point you have to concerned for her health (and that of her pups) if she's not getting enough nutrients. Did he suggest giving her some Nutri-Cal?

| I know nothing about breeding, but just wanted to wish you luck. Please listen to the advice Woogie Man is giving you. There is a lot of experience and wisdom being offered to you. You really are quite fortunate to have someone of that caliber to offer you help.

| You should be able to get Nutri-Cal at the pet store. PetSmart has carried it but I think someone on here mentioned that they now carry some other product instead that's basically the same. Given her pickiness, I don't think supplementing her with some would be a bad thing at this time. Your vet may also carry it or a similar product. Liver is an organ meat and is very nutrient dense, but is also very rich. That's why I cautioned you about giving it to her exclusively. I have a girl that gets picky with every pregnancy and liver is the one thing she eats without fail. Some don't tolerate it as well but you can try giving a few bites of it along with her other food if you still have some of it. She may need smaller meals fed more often at this time to avoid stomach upset. Scrambled eggs and chicken are good, too. Really, it's a matter of finding something for her to eat as she needs the extra nutrients in these last couple of weeks. She needs to have some carbs, too, and can get them in either rice or potatoes. The carbs convert to sugars which her body needs. I'm not trying to be an alarmist in suggesting some of the problems she could develop. Anemia, pre-eclampsia and hypoglycemia can all be brought on by poor nutrition. Not saying she has these conditions, but you want to make sure she gets as much good food as you can get in her now to ward them off. She really should be getting about 1 1/2 times her normal amount of food at this time. The blood work I asked about would show any deficiencies and give you good answers to her overall condition now. I still can't figure why the vet says she's in the first stage of labor. It doesn't make sense to me. It shouldn't be labor and I wonder what symptoms she's showing to make her say that. Going by your vet's figuring, 'if' it was first stage labor and it lasted 'up' to a week, then Sadie would be having her pups by no later than day 57. The earliest I ever had a girl go was day 59 and that scared me. Day 57 is a full week early, which is like a woman giving birth a month early. It wouldn't hurt to get an answer now on what she meant. It's just Friday so why wait until Monday? Best of luck with Sadie. I hope she does well for you and has a trouble-free whelp.

| Yes I have a mentor and she has been breeding for awhile now so I am real comfortable with her. I also got Sadie to start eating the pro plan again and she really likes it. This is the only can food she will eat now and tonight while I was feeding her, she will only eat it if I hand feed her, Scooter wanted some so I went to go give him a bite and she about bit his head off. She did not want to share. She is doing really well and getting a big belly on her now. I will be glad when this is all over for her. Scooter goes this Monday to be fixed and Sadie will go asap after the puppies |
