Senior Yorkie Talker | Im sooo Upset, Smothered a Boy My Gezell smothered one of her baby boys only 4 days old. I tried everything to revive him. I cant stop crying feeling it is my fault, WHY did this happen? I am in here constantly checking on them. Why did this happen? What can I do to prevent it again? I am pulling them from under her at least 8xs a day. Now I am going to be so paranoid. Help with any solutions please!!! Heartbroken :-(

| I don't have any suggestions, I'm sorry. I'm sure it's not unheard off, just keep a better eye on them. Don't feel guilty just try to prevent it from happening again.

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | there needs to be guard rails on your whelping box! that helps them when they happen to roll over on top of the puppies....so that their full weight doesn't smother them....

Senior Yorkie Talker | why She starts by feeding them sitting up til she is exhausted. They crawl under her and she lays down on them. It happened so fast... :-( He was warm to the touch when I found him..The ER vet is 20-25min away so it was useless. I feel so bad. Since this happened over an hour ago I pulled another one out from under her who was crying and couldnt breath. It was in the middle of the box. How can I seperate them every 2 hours between feedings without her going crazy? Heart-broken-

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | i would not seperate them.it will stress out the mother.....and maybe even the puppies...and they can both go down fairly quick...you need to think of ways to build or create temp guardrails unless be by then 24/7..until they are old enough to move

| Wow, 9 years old! Thats like a 63 year old woman giving birth. Much too old, I hope you plan on having her spayed. That poor momma. I am sorry she lost one of her puppies but you really need to be with her and help her. |

| Make sure the bed is not thick with bedding..I use a made to measure clothe weewee pads...and I do not recall a mother not moving when she laid on a puppy...most cry and the mom moves fast.. I do know friends who have had pups smother in towels or blankets in the bedding... No advise, sorry...maybe I would take them away after feeding until they are about 2weeks and bigger... |

| I am sorry you lost a puppy. I agree with Yorkie Rose that the bedding should not be real thick. I have never had a mom smother a pup either and my whelping boxes do not have rails. I use bottomless whelping boxes and I set the box on top of some sheets with a heating pad underneath. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | devastated Gezell is 4 years old NOT 9. I am MOST DEFINETLY getting her fixed. I could not go through this again and i will not let Gezell go through this again. She still looks for him all over thinking Im hiding him..:-( Of course I will not leave her alone. I slept on the floor next to her and the box, well I slept 20min... I will do what I have to do to make sure the others are ok. She is still not eating even with Nutri-cal. We are both depressed. She leaves them often or just watches them cry. I had to bottle feed one time last night. I am taking her to Vet tomorrow hoping he can help her. Heart-Broken

Senior Yorkie Talker | .. I do have a nice soft blanket in the box. I was told to keep it soft? I am taking them out right now. She feeds sitting up most of the time then she lays down when she looks completely exhausted and its on the pups. I have pulled them from under her several times. Maybe because she is not eating so she is exhausted and doesnt feel or hear them. idk..i just wish it was 3 weeks already! :-( Heart-Broken Quote:

| First of all, I am sorry for your loss, try not to feel guilty about it, it is not your fault, sadly these things happen. How big is your whelping box, maybe your mama is having a hard time finding enough room to lay down without laying on one of her babies. I use a clear plastic tote, one of the ones that are designed to store stuff under the bed, they are high enough to keep the babies in and still have easy access for mama. The one I use is about 18 x 24 inches, it gives mama enough room to stretch out and still lots of room for the babes. I also like the clear plastic as you can see through it and see if a pup gets behind mama. I use a washable pee pad cut to fit for my bedding, nothing too thick or with too many layers for pups to get tangled in. These totes are big enough that I can put my heating pad under one side and leave the other side cooler for mama. Your pups will instinctively crawl to the heated side or to their mama. I would rather my box looks a little one the big side, than too small for everyone to be comfortable.
