Discharge question First off would like to say hello to the forum! I am owner of two yorkie's who are the mummy and daddy of their first litter, born on sunday the 25th of october. Angel gave birth to 6 healthy puppies who are suckling well Now on to the question. I know that it is normal for there to be discharge after the birth, but most people describe this as reddish/brown and only to worry if it is bright red or has a bad odour. Angel's discharge is none of these things. It appears to be a very dark green colour which does not smell. She is eating/drinking fine and acting her usual self. Is this discharge something to be worried about? I also have a question for when the puppies are older. How do I go about introducing mum and pups to my other dogs, or should i keep them away alltogether? Thanks Emma

Congratulations on your new litter and welcome to Yorkie Talk. A green discharge means she is still passing afterbirth. In most cases it is normal but she needs to be watched closely. The pups nursing will help to stimulate her uterus and the uterus will continue to contract and help expel the afterbirth. Be sure to take her temperature and if her temperature gets near 103 or above then she will need to get to the vets immediately. The discharge should eventually change to a brownish red color and the discharge can sometimes continue to some degree until the pups are 6 to 8 weeks old. If you are unsure if she passed all the afterbirth then you might want to have her checked by a vet and the vet can give her a cleanout shot. Also, watch the momma teats closely and if they get red, lumpy and hard that is an indication of mastitis. She will need to see a vet if that develops. As for introducing the pups to your other dogs, you need to wait until they are much older. I will introduce my pups to a few of the other females I have that are very gentle with puppies when the pups are around 6 to 8 weeks old but I do it slowly. I know my dogs really well and I know which ones love little puppies and which one don't. You have to be very careful because some dogs don't like to be bothered by pups and they will snap at them. I know a lady who's male dog killed some pups that were around 12 weeks old.

Thanks for your reply. I think i will phone the vets in the morning and let them check her over just in case. She seems to be urinating quite frequently today, is this a sign of anything or coult it be the uterus contraction causing this? Emma

I am not really sure but I would be a little concerned. She may have some retained afterbirth. Please do get her checked and let us know how she is doing. How big is Angel? She has a lot of puppies to feed so make sure she is getting a calcium supplement and lots of food. She will need to eat about 4 times a day and make sure she gets something to eat right before bedtime. The pups can really drain them when they are nursing all night.

She is just under 6lbs i do believe. I was shocked to see 6 puppies come out of her as the vet said she could only see about 3 puppies when we got her scanned. I will definately call the vets asap and let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

I took Angel to the vets thismorning, luckily they could fit me in at 11.10am which meant leaving immediately after phoning them. She was checked over and the vet told me the discharge is nothing to worry about. Angel had been sick thismorning so the vet gave her some electrolytes and some food to help get all the nutrients back in her. We booked another appointment for tomorrow evening although she already seems to have perked up a bit and seems much happier. I'm guessing she was just suffering the strain of 6 puppies. So all thats left is to show you all the new additions to the family!

I am glad you took her in. Make sure she eats lots of food. You can add eggs and cottage cheese to her food also. Momma and babies are adorable.
