Hello

My precious baby is in her 2nd heat. She is 16 months and weighs 10 pounds. I didn't know that she was in heat until I saw a mark that she left on my bed when I went to pick her up. I also have a 7 pound male yorkie in the house who seems not to be interested in her at all. All she do is lay around the house and seems to be very tired. I have since seperated them because although I plan to breed, I am waiting until her 3rd heat because she is only 16 months and I don't think she is ready and I want my vet to run the necessary tests on the both of them to make sure that it is ok to breed them. Could it be possible that he already got to her?

Can I ask why you want to breed a 10 pound yorkie? She's not within the yorkie standard according to the YTCA and AKC standard. Your male is almost out of the standard range as well. And to answer your question if they were together yes it's a possiblity but if she's just starting her season it's unlikely she's pregnant and if that is the case I would recommend spaying her and love her as a wonderful pet that she is

I was told that & pound was a standard size yorkie So my male is within the standards then again looking at his last vet visit which was last month he weighed 6 pounds not seven so sorry about the mistake. My female weighs 10 pounds even. So are you saying because of her weight she should not be bred?

Donna is right. A ten pound yorkie is way out of the AKC standard. No matter what you were 'told", on the AKC website the standard is "under seven pounds".

If you want to improve the yorkie breed everyone needs to know the standard inside out, pedigrees, health issues within the lines of those you choose to breed, health testing for liver shunt, LP ect....and if your yorkie bitch is 10 pounds she is out of the yorkie standard so for that reason alone I would spay and love her as a wonderful pet. As far as the male goes same applies to what I said above. Studding out requires alot of things as well. It's not cheap to do all the required health testing that goes along with breeding and then you have to worry about marking and is he up to the yorkie standard....good ear set, good top line, good bite, nice silky dark steel blue coat, no liver shunt issues, no LP ect.... the list goes on...does he represent the yorkie standard as best he can? Do you have a mentor that can help you and be on call 24/7? Lots of preparation goes into breeding. Has he been evaluated by show exhibitors/breeders/judges?

oh ok but she is pregnant I guess she will have puppies but if she is not then I will surley get her fixed. It's not that important for me to breed my dogs. I have been reading different sites on yorkie talk and I don't think breeding is something I want to do. I have never bred before and God forbids if something happens to one of my babies I don't know what I will do. Can i get her fixed while she is in heat or do I need to wait

You know I just have to say this....You have been a breath of fresh air!! You didn't get offended nor blew any of what I said out of context and "listened" to great advice

If you love your babies and you haven't bred before and it's not really what you want to do spay/neuter both babies and love them as your sweet babies and they will appreciate all your love!
You can have her fixed as soon as she finishes her cycle, whether or not she took. As soon as you see she's finished I would take her in ASAP and have her spayed and have your boy neutered!
When breeding we all take risks and if you love your babies and not interested in breeding I would suggest you do above and just love them to pieces

Wow...it is very refreshing to see someone considering all the options and willing to step up and do what is in the best interest of their Yorkies, and the breed as a whole.

Sadly, you don't see that much these days. I wish there were more people like you!

To answer your question, it is not recommended that you spay a female while she is in heat. It increased the chances of hemmoraging. Best to wait until the heat cycle is over, then do the spay.

thanks for all the advice. I really love my babies and my little boy got fixed today and he is doing fine. I think I was only considering breeding because my friends keep asking me to but I am inexperienced and I rather have my babies as pets instead of breeding machines. (No offense to breeders) I appreciate all the comments and response to my threads. You guys made me realize that my babies are the best thing that ever happen to me. Thanks a million and I will keep you guys posted about my princess.
