| Female pregnant, what to do with the daddy? Hello. Our female yorkie is pregnant and is expecting in early October. We are learning all we can about what to do in the delivery and after. We haven't been able to locate information on what to do with our male yorkie (the daddy). He is still a puppy (one year old) and they are quite inseparable. He is also still slightly wild and hasn't' calmed down much despite getting neutered following the mating. Is it okay to let him be around her while she is delivering? Following the delivery is it okay for him to be around the puppies? If not, how long she we wait to allow them to be together? Any information you can provide is helpful! Thank you. |

| Absolutely not. Keep him separated from the mom and babies. You never know how the mom will react or how he will react. It is not fair to the babies to risk any harm to them from either dog.

There have been males that will eat and kill the young, also females wanting to protect their young may attack the male. Then there are some males that are great with the mom and babies. But I wouldnt chance it. Let daddy see the babies from afar untill they are older.never leave mother and Babies with the Male alone. | |

| Keep them separated. The new mother does not need any other distractions while taking care of her first litter. She might be agressive to the male or he might even kill the babies. He can even harm the babies when they are 6 or 7 weeks old. I am not saying that he will, but he might.

| I always keep my momma and babies separated from the other dogs. Most likely the momma will growl and snap at the male to keep him away. Usually by they time the puppies are a week or so old the female will want to get away from the puppies more. I keep my mommas and babies in a spare bedroom and I let them out several times a day to visit and run around. She will let you know when she is ready but I would not let the male near the puppies until they are older. Most all of my males don't want anything to do with puppies, they will run from them. |

| In my experience, keep them separate for at least the first couple of weeks. After that she will let you know if its ok or not for him to be near. Every dog is different, but I have never seen one that would let any dog near their pups the first week or 2. Feel it out, and if she is comfy with it, after a couple of weeks he can have a peek here and there, but never leave him alone with the pups or let him play freely with them until they are much more independant.

| During the pregnancy I let them be around each other. I seperated them by the time she was about 50 something days pregnant.Once she had her puppy ,I kept her and the puppy in my bathroom until the puppy was 6-7 weeks old.Once the puppy was 7 weeks and 3 days old I put them together. She really did not like the daddy getting too close to the puppy. The daddy really hasn't shown any interest in his baby since. You really never know how the mom will react until she is near the daddy. I wouldnt let the daddy near the mom during delivery. She will be nervous enough. Genie,Cookie,Lola,Angel & Lucky |

| I agree with all the others. Keep them separated. What would be the benefit? No pros, all cons to this scenario, IMO. |
